ISBN: 1000612775

Pages : 134
Book Description
This book examines how states justify the domestic use of military force to foreign audiences. By deploying a sociological approach to legitimacy and drawing on conceptual tools which deal directly with the dynamics of justification, it offers a novel framework for understanding the politics of international legitimacy and domestic armed action. The framework is grounded in detailed qualitative analyses of civil wars in Sri Lanka (2006–2009), and Aceh, Indonesia (2003–2005). The book shows that the meaning of legitimacy in a particular context does not flow directly from a menu of relevant rules, norms and ideas. Rather, legitimacy is always politically contested. When states justify fighting at home, the success of their claims is determined by their capacity to appeal to rules and norms but also to frame their action in ways that their audiences find compelling. Therefore, the framework offered in this book draws attention to the crucial but largely neglected role of audiences in the constitution of legitimacy. This book will be of interest to students of security studies, law, human rights and international relations.

Whither Southeast Asia Terrorism?
Author: Arabinda Acharya
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 1783263911
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 312
Book Description
More than 11 years after the 9/11 attacks and 10 years after the October 2002 Bali bombings, the need for a comprehensive assessment of what the countries in Southeast Asia have achieved is overdue. We need to consider whether the strategies against both the domestic and transnational terrorist and extremist threat have been appropriate and have yielded desired results. The aim of this book is to make a comprehensive assessment of the threats of terrorism and extremism in the region and of the policies and practices adopted by the regional countries to counter the same. It is also necessary to evaluate if the region has become a safer place after the decade-long fight. Most importantly, it is time to ask if we need a rethink or develop a new strategy to contain and manage the threats of terrorism and extremism.

We Don't Want the Smoking Gun to be a Mushroom Cloud
Author: Ronald Huisken

Pages : 84
Book Description
"In the second half of 2002, when the US intelligence community was tasked to prepare a National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq's WMD capacities, the administration had been already been saying for over six months that Iraq under Saddam posed an intolerable risk that the US was determined to address. In other words, intelligence was catching up with policy. Moreover, the administration's determination to proceed in the face of widespread opposition meant that the stakes in terms of US credibility and prestige were seen in Washington as having become dauntingly large. In the event, the intelligence community slid over the fact that it had too few 'dots' to make confident judgments on WMD in Iraq."--Abstract from SDSC web site.

Muslims, Terrorism and Rise of the Hindu Right in India
Author: A. D. D. Gordon
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Hindus
Languages : en
Pages : 56
Book Description
"India is located in the heart of a region in which more puritanical forms of Islam have been gaining ground for several decades. This radicalisation of Islam in South Asia has been furthered by the 'war on terror', and particularly the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Against this background, elements within India's predominantly Hindu population have been seeking to 'Hinduise' India's secular polity, sometimes directing violence against India's 130 million Muslims in the process. In response to these regional and domestic developments, a small minority of Indian Muslims outside Kashmir has chosen to take up the bomb and the Kalashnikov. This movement is closely tied to violent jihadi movements in neighbouring countries, especially the Gulf and Pakistan. The recently ousted, Hindu-led coalition government that has governed in New Delhi for the last seven years has at times responded harshly to this terrorism. Were it to continue, such a response could precipitate a classic downward spiral into terrorism and counter-terrorism. Any such development would have profound implications for India and the region. This paper examines the prospects for such a development in the context of the recent election of a more secular, Congress-led coalition in New Delhi. It argues that while the new government will seek to return India to its secular roots, now that the Bharatiya Janata Party is out of office at the centre, elements within the Hindu Right are likely to foment unrest between Hindus and Muslims, particularly at the periphery of Indian politics, in order to 'claw back' political power at the centre. Any such tactics may well cancel out the secular strategies of the new government."--Abstract from SDSC web site.
