Louisa County, Virginia
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Court records
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
This title presents an approximately exact transcription of Louisa County, Virginia Order Book 1774-1782, containing the proceedings of the Louisa County court for nearly the entire duration of the American Revolution. These orders are typical of what you might expect in Virginia's court order books from the 18th century: somewhat 'boring' entries related to lawsuits involving debt, ejectment, trespass; appointments of individuals to county offices; etc. However, the motivation for this transcription is primarily genealogical, and you will certainly find more than a few 'exciting' records of genealogical value herein.

Book Description
"In the militia records found here, note that each Captain held a small group of men who lived close to him in the area to form a company. In this volume there are over 3,000 names of the men in companies given. Each company met four times each year for practice and once a year for all companies to come together and a General Court Martial once a year so that every man under age 45 and above 16 was required to meet these six times per year. The Court Martial records consist of an accounting of their service, some were fined and some were confined to jail for an absence or desertion of their duty. The chance of one man missing at least once in the time period is great and thus this become a real census of who lived in the area over the twenty-five year time period. A large number of events are also disclosed with the information found in these records."--Publisher's website.
