Book Description
This book deals with the theory of collisions of medium-energy atoms on the surface of a solid and the accompanying effects, namely, atom and molecule scattering, charge exchange, sputtering of atoms and large biomolecules, ion and electron emission. The topics covered include analytical theories and computer investigations which the authors made over the past 30 years. Special attention is paid to the development of the models and mechanisms for the phenomena occurring at atomic collisions on solid surfaces. The secondary processes are described for the various combinations of incident ions and a solid. Single- and multiple-charged ions are used as the incident ions bombarding targets being different both in structure (single crystal, polycrystal and amorphous) and electronic properties (metal, semiconductor and insulator). One of the major goals of the studies discussed is the development of a theoretical foundation for the diagnostics of the composition, structure and state of the surface of solids and thin films, as well as for their quality control in present day technology. The book will be of interest to all those involved in ion-solid interaction studies.

Perhaps the most controversiaZ aspect of this voZume is the number (V) assigned to the conference in this series. ActuaZZy, the first conference to be heZd under the titZe '~tomic CoZZisions in SoZids" was heZd at Sussex University in EngZand in 1969 and the second at GausdaZ, Norway in 1971, which wouZd ZogicaZZy make the conference heZd at GatZinburg, Tennessee, U.S.A. in 1973 the third (III). However, the appearance of the proceedings of the 1971 GausdaZ Conference (pubZished by Gordon and Breach) bore the number IV. The reasoning behind this was that, in fact, two pre vious conferences had been ZargeZy dedicated to the same subject area. The first of these Was at Aarhus, Denmark in 1965 and the second in 1967 was heZd in ChaZk River, Canada. Hence, the number V for the 1973 meeting. ActuaZZy, the conference can easiZy be traced back to Paris, France in 196Z when it went under the coZorfuZ titZe of '~e Bom bardement Ionique." In 1962 a smaZZ conference was heZd at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, U.S.A. at which the discovery of channeZing was first formaZZy annunciated. This was foZZowed by conferences at ChaZk River, Canada in 1963 and at HarweZZ, EngZand in 1964. More over, immediateZy foZZowing the ChaZk RiVer conference in 1967 there was a conference on higher energy coZZisions at Brookhaven, New York, U.S.A. Thus, strictly speaking, the Gatlinburg meeting is the tenth (X) in the series.

Book Description
"Perhaps the most controversial aspect of this volume is the number (V) assigned to the conference in this series. Actually, the first conference to be held under the title "Atomic Collisions in Solids" was held at Sussex University in England in 1969 and the second at Gausdal, Norway in 1971, which would logically make the conference held at Gatlinburg, Tennessee, U.S.A. in 1973 the third (III). However, the appearance of the proceedings of the 1971 Gausdal Conference (published by Gordon and Breach) bore the number IV. The reasoning behind this was that, in. fact, two previous conferences had been largely dedicated to the same subject area. The first of these was at Aarhus, Denmark in 1965 and the second in 1967 was held in Chalk River, Canada. Hence, the number V for the 1973 meeting."--Page v

Book Description
Inelastic Ion-Surface Collisions is a collection of papers presented at the 1976 International Workshop on Inelastic-Ion-Surface Collisions, held at Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, New Jersey. This book contains 12 chapters and begins with the identification and study of the underlying physical mechanisms associated with ionization, neutralization, and excitation responsible for the observed sputtering and particle backscattering outershell inelastic collision phenomena. Other chapters discuss the role of the bulk, the surface, and the near surface interaction regions on the degree of ionization, neutralization, and excitation. The remaining chapters deal with the oscillations in the energy dependence of backscattered ions, wake riding states, and optical polarization effects from beam transmission through tilted foils and from beam particle bombardment of surfaces at grazing incidence. This book is of great value to atomic, solid state, nuclear, surface, chemical, and space physicists.

Book Description
This volume is devoted to the physics, instrumentation and analytical methods of secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) in relation to solid surfaces. It describes modern models of secondary ion formation and the factors influencing sensitivity of measurements and the range of applications. All the main parts of SIMS instruments are discussed in detail. Emphasising practical applications the book also considers the methods and analytical procedures for constitutional analysis of solids --- including metals, semiconductors, organic and biological samples. Methods of depth profiling, spatially multidimensional analysis and study of processes at the surface, such as adsorption, catalysis and oxidation, are given along with the application of SIMS in combination with other methods of surface analysis.
