The present book contains the papers that have been presented at the IUTAM-Symposium on Atmospheric Dispersion of Heavy Gases and Small Particles, which was held from August 29th to September 2nd 1983 in Scheveningen in The Netherlands. Attendees from many countries were present; 4 review lectures and about 25 research papers were presented. In 1969 the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) established the Committee on Challenges of Modern Society (CCMS). The subject of air pollution was from the start one of the priority problems under study within the framework of various pilot studies undertaken by this Committee. The organization of a yearly conference dealing with air pollution modeling and its application has become one of the main activities within the pilot study relating to air pollution. The international conference was organized for the first five years by the United States and for the second five years by the Federal Republic of Germany. Belgium, represented by the Prime Minister's Office for Science policy, became responsible in 1980 for organizing the third five years of the annual conference. This volume contains the papers presented at the 15th NATO/CCMS International Technical Meeting (ITM) on Air Pollution Modeling and Its Application, held in St. Louis, Missouri, from the 15th to 19th April 1985. This ITM was jointly organized by the Prime Minister's Office for Science Policy, Belgium (Pilot Country); by the Environmental Protection Agency, Atmospheric Sciences Research Laboratory, United States (Host Country); and by Washington University, Mechanical Engineering Department (Host Organization).

Over recent years there has been an increasing awareness of the risks of locating hazardous industries near heavily populated, environmentally sensitive areas. The VDI Commission on Air Pollution Prevention - in cooperation with the German Meteorological Society - presents in this book the proceedings of the first International Symposium on "Environmental Meteorology", held in Wurzburg (West Germany) from 29 September to 1 October 1987. The primary goal was to get together scientists, experts of the meteorological services, specialists of environmental boards, and consulting engineers of the European countries. An equally important objective was to provide a bench mark document in the resulting proceedings publication. The 1987 symposium shall start a series of symposia on all fields of environmental meteorology to be held once in three or four years in one of the European countries. We are full of hope to come to an intense cooperation with the national meteorological and environmental societies in the countries with this concern. We like to express our sincere appreciation to the authors for their efforts and attention to the quality shown herein. The credit must be extended to the session Chairmen and to the advisory committee for the selection of the papers. We think the book contributes substantially to a better understanding of meteorology being the link between emission and deposition of atmospheric pollutants.

If one surveys the development of wind engineering, one comes to the conclusion that the challenge of urban climatology is one of the most important remaining tasks for the wind engineers. But what distinguishes wind engineering in urban areas from conventional wind engineering? Principally, the fact that the effects studied are usually unique to a particular situation, requiring consideration of the surroundings of the buildings. In the past, modelling criteria have been developed that make it possible to solve environmental problems with great confidence, and studies validated the models: at least in a neutrally stratified atmosphere. The approach adopted in the book is that of applied fluid mechanics, since this forms the basis for the evaluation of the urban wind field. Variables for air quality or loads are problem specific, or even random, and methods for studying them are based on risk analysis, which is also presented. Criteria are developed for a systematic approach to urban wind engineering problems, including parameter studies. The five sections of the book are: Fundamentals of urban boundary layer and dispersion; Forces on complex structures in built-up areas; Air pollution in cities; Numerical solution techniques; and Posters.
