Antarctic Atlas

Pages : 162
Book Description
A FINANCIAL TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR 2020 SHORTLISTED FOR THE ESTWA AWARD FOR ILLUSTRATED TRAVEL BOOK OF THE YEAR 2022 One of the least-known places on the planet, the only continent on earth with no indigenous population, Antarctica is a world apart. From a leading cartographer with the British Antarctic Survey, this new collection of maps and data reveals Antarctica as we have never seen it before. This is not just a book of traditional maps. It measures everything from the thickness of ice beneath our feet to the direction of ice flows. It maps volcanic lakes, mountain ranges the size of the Alps and gorges longer than the Grand Canyon, all hidden beneath the ice. It shows us how air bubbles trapped in ice tell us what the earth's atmosphere was like 750,000 years ago, proving the effects of greenhouse gases. Colonies of emperor penguins abound around the coastline, and the journeys of individual seals around the continent and down to the sea bed in search of food have been intricately tracked and mapped. Twenty-nine nations have research stations in Antarctica and their unique architecture is laid out here, along with the challenges of surviving in Antarctica'sunforgiving environment. Antarctica is also the frontier of our fight against climate change. If its ice melts, it will swamp almost every coastal city in the world. Antarctic Atlas illustrates the harsh beauty and magic of this mysterious continent, and shows how, far from being abstract, it has direct relevance to us all.

National Ice Center Antarctic Sea Ice Atlas 1997

Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 88
Book Description
The National Ice Center (NIC), under sponsorship of the United States Navy, the United States Coast Guard, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), provides sea ice analyses encompassing the "Arctic" and the "Antarctic". These analyses continue the data set established under our previous name, the Joint Ice Center. These atlases continue the near real-time integration of remotely sensed data and point observations and differ only in the Arctic and Antarctic are split into two separate publications per hemisphere per year. This publication is the 12th edition of the annual "Antarctic Sea Ice Atlas" published in hard copy format by NIC. The atlas contains weekly charts depicting the sea ice extent and coverage in the Southern Hemisphere from the first week of January through October 1997. During the last week of October 1997, the Antarctic paper charts were replaced by digital charts in a Graphics Interface Format (GIF). Printouts of the digital GIF charts for all Antarctic regions are contained in Supplement 1 to the "Antarctic Sea Ice Atlas". Future annual atlases will be available in a digital format on CD-ROM though the national Snow and Ice Date Center (http://www-nsidc.colorado.edu). NSIDC is the official archive center for the NIC. The NIC uses a wide variety of data sources in the production of sea ice analyses. The line types used in the analyses provide metadata information with regard to sensor type. Solid lines depict boundaries derived from: point observations, Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Operational Line Scan (DMSP OLS) and NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data. Dash-dash-dotted line depicts boundaries derived from DMSP Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I), and dashed lines depict boundaries derived from forecast models and climatology.

Atlas of Submarine Glacial Landforms
Author: J.A. Dowdeswell
Publisher: Geological Society of London
ISBN: 1786202689
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 631
Book Description
New geophysical techniques (multibeam echo sounding and 3D seismics) have revolutionized high-resolution imaging of the modern seafloor and palaeo-shelf surfaces in Arctic and Antarctic waters, generating vast quantities of data and novel insights into sedimentary architecture and past environmental conditions. The Atlas of Submarine Glacial Landforms is a comprehensive and timely summary of the current state of knowledge of these high-latitude glacier-influenced systems. The Atlas presents over 180 contributions describing, illustrating and discussing the full variability of landforms found on the high-latitude glacier-influenced seafloor, from fjords and continental shelves to the continental slope, rise and deep-sea basins beyond. The distribution and geometry of these submarine landforms provide key information on past ice-sheet extent and the direction and nature of ice flow and dynamics. The papers discuss individual seafloor landforms, landform assemblages and entire landsystems from relatively mild to extreme glacimarine climatic settings and on timescales from the modern margins of tidewater glaciers, through Quaternary examples to ancient glaciations in the Late Ordovician.

Colour Atlas of Glacial Phenomena
Author: Michael J. Hambrey
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1315355825
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 532
Book Description
Considering that glaciers and ice sheets cover about 10% of the Earth’s land surface in a world where human civilization is increasingly impacted by the effects of changing glacial activity, Colour Atlas of Glacial Phenomena presents itself as an indispensable guide for students, professionals, and researchers who want to be better informed while studying and tracking the future influences of glaciers and ice sheets on the global environment. While stressing both the beauty and utility of glaciers, the authors cover critical features of glaciers and their landforms and provide useful explanations of the key concepts in glaciology and glacial geology. The authors expand to demonstrate how our lives are influenced by the Cryosphere, a key component of the Earth system and how this heightens the vulnerability of glaciers and ice sheets to deterioration. This illustrated book also helpfully maps out regions of mountain glaciers and ice caps around the world for a practical reference and discusses the products of glacial erosion and deposition integral to understanding rising global sea levels.

Antarctic Sea Ice, 1973-1976

Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Microwave remote sensing
Languages : en
Pages : 228
Book Description
Data from the Electrically Scanning Microwave Radiometer (ESMR) on the Nimbus 5 satellite are used to determine the extent and distribution of Antarctic sea ice. The characteristics of the southern ocean, the mathematical formulas used to obtain quantitative sea ice concentrations, the general characteristics of the seasonal sea ice growth/decay cycle and regional differences, and the observed seasonal growth/decay cycle for individual years and interannual variations of the ice cover are discussed. The sea ice data from the ESMR are presented in the form of color-coded maps of the Antarctic and the southern oceans. The maps show brightness temperatures and concentrations of pack ice averaged for each month, 4-year monthly averages, and month-to-month changes. Graphs summarizing the results, such as areas of sea ice as a function of time in the various sectors of the southern ocean are included. The images demonstrate that satellite microwave data provide unique information on large-scale sea ice conditions for determining climatic conditions in polar regions and possible global climatic changes.
