Book Description
Only the best officers are given command of U.S. Navy ships, and only the elite of these are selected for aircraft carriers. The USS America was the third of four Kitty Hawk-class super-carriers. Commissioned in 1965, decommissioned in 1996, she served three times in Vietnam, and once each in Libya, the Persian Gulf and Bosnia. This book profiles the 23 men who commanded the America and her crew of 5,000 during 31 years. Most of them were combat veterans--World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Mayaguez Rescue Operations, Lebanon, Haiti, Libya, Bosnia, and Desert Storm. Four were Naval Academy graduates; seven were test pilots; one became Inspector General of the Navy; one wore both Navy wings and submariner dolphins; and one was a prisoner of war in Vietnam for nearly six years. Two retired as admirals--one was Chief of Naval Operations--five as vice admirals, and 11 as rear admirals. Each profile gives a career account based on official biographies, published memoirs, and interviews with the commanders or their families.

Dragon's Jaw
Author: Stephen Coonts
Publisher: Da Capo Press
ISBN: 0306903466
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 381
Book Description
A riveting Vietnam War story--and one of the most dramatic in aviation history--told by a New York Times bestselling author and a prominent aviation historian Every war has its "bridge"--Old North Bridge at Concord, Burnside's Bridge at Antietam, the railway bridge over Burma's River Kwai, the bridge over Germany's Rhine River at Remagen, and the bridges over Korea's Toko Ri. In Vietnam it was the bridge at Thanh Hoa, called Dragon's Jaw. For seven long years hundreds of young US airmen flew sortie after sortie against North Vietnam's formidable and strategically important bridge, dodging a heavy concentration of anti-aircraft fire and enemy MiG planes. Many American airmen were shot down, killed, or captured and taken to the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" POW camp. But after each air attack, when the smoke cleared and the debris settled, the bridge stubbornly remained standing. For the North Vietnamese it became a symbol of their invincibility; for US war planners an obsession; for US airmen a testament to American mettle and valor. Using after-action reports, official records, and interviews with surviving pilots, as well as untapped Vietnamese sources, Dragon's Jaw chronicles American efforts to destroy the bridge, strike by bloody strike, putting readers into the cockpits, under fire. The story of the Dragon's Jaw is a story rich in bravery, courage, audacity, and sometimes luck, sometimes tragedy. The "bridge" story of Vietnam is an epic tale of war against a determined foe.

Valor of Many Stripes

Pages : 225
Book Description
The award of a military decoration does not define valor--it only recognizes it. Many acts of notable courage and self-sacrifice occur on the battlefield but are often obscured in the fog of battle or lost to history, unrecognized and unheralded. The largely overlooked men and women in this volume did incredible things in dire circumstances. Although in some cases decorations were awarded--including several Medals of Honor--their stories remain unknown.

Conduct Unbecoming

Book Description
Men and women who serve in the armed forces are subject to a different legal code than those they protect. Throughout American history, some have--through action or failure to act or by circumstances--found themselves facing prosecution by the United States military. One measure of a nation's sense of justice is how it treats those who surrender some of their rights to defend the rights of fellow citizens. Beginning with the first court-martial (predating the nation itself) and continuing to the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the War on Terror, this book examines the proceedings of 15 courts-martial that raised such important legal questions as: When does advocacy become treason? Who bears ultimate responsibility when troops act illegally? What are the limits in protesting injustice? The defendants include such familiar names as Paul Revere and William Calley. The authors examine such overlooked cases as the Somers Mutiny, the trial of the San Patricios and the Port Chicago Mutiny. These trials demonstrate that guaranteeing military justice--especially in the midst of armed conflict--is both a challenge and a necessity in a free society.

The Price of the Lie
Author: Roger O'Guin
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1669850773
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 323
Book Description
Today I witnessed a sky that was overwhelmed with cumulus nimbus clouds, and the sun had positioned itself to assist those puffs of beauty to show off. Artists have set this view to canvas long ago, before man invented so many distractions. Like Vincent van Gogh with his starry, starry nights. I recall as a child being able to witness an ebony back background above me, speckled with so many winking stars that it was impossible to count them. A panorama of clouds, several hundred years ago must have inspired a composter to write a piano concerto because of its extraordinary appearance. Unlike what we now call modern life, with many people being distracted by the noises and desires of human busyness, earlier artists relied on the beauty of nature to duplicate and make permanent, such splendor. I wonder now, how many people fail to realize just how magnificent nature is. And although politics should shrink to insignificance in contradiction to nature, it created to much contention, and disunity. It holds sway over too many of earths citizens. The tale I am about to tell has little to do with ordinary things. Such as, how one arrives at a loss of some fondly held item. Rather it is about the loss of personal control, personal esteem or personal achievement. This writing is not about any specific individual or specific disappointment. It is not about privilege or a lack of privilege, it’s not about someone’s good looks or one’s station in life. This is about us as a nation and how we think, how we feel and most importantly, what we do about it or fail to do about it as regards politics! It’s no secret that some of our governmental notables are incompetent, biased and even self-serving. This is the point of the book.
