Johann David Heinichen (1683-1729) was a distinguished composer, a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach, and Cappellmeister at the court of August I in Dresden. His tratise, Der General-Bass in der Composition, is one of the most comprehensive sources for the late Baroque practice of figured-bass, or thorough-bass, accompaniment. It is a fund of information about many complex problems confronting musicians in the performance and interpretation of Baroque music, including meters, embellishments, dissonance, particular complications for recitative, and use of the figured bass. With a judicious combination of translation, interpretation, and commentary George J. Buelow makes Heinichen's famous treatise accessible for contemporary scholars and performers. Buelow provides translations of key sections of the treatise, explains its historical significance, clarifies Heinichen's obscurities, and relates the treatise to other musical theories and practices of the Baroque, including those of Gasparini, Mattheson, and the Bachs. The "art of being free" is an essential part of democracy. It involves, Mark Reinhardt believes, bringing into being the multiple spaces in and practices through which individuals and groups help to constitute their lives, their selves, their worlds. Americans are presently witnessing a contraction of officially sanctioned spaces for citizen action. It is now crucial, Reinhardt argues, to identify ways of opening new spaces for the direct practice of democratic politics. Reinhardt treats the writings of Alexis de Tocqueville, Karl Marx, and Hannah Arendt as exemplary sources for an expansion of political possibility. These writers indicate where and how the new spaces can be brought into being, and they reveal acts of making space as some of the prime moments of politics. Reinhardt's extended readings of these writers, never previously treated together, are quite unlike the familiar understandings of their thought. A virtuoso violinist, conductor, composer, and a professor of mathematics and botany, Francesco Galeazzi (1758–1819) firmly believed that musical education should be clear, demonstrable, and practical. In 1791 and 1796, he published the two volumes of his Elementi teorico-practici di musica, a treatise that demonstrated both his thorough grounding in the work of earlier theorists and his own approach to musical study. The first volume gave precise instructions on the violin and how to play it; the second demonstrated his command of other instruments and genres and provided comprehensive introductions to music theory, music history, and music aesthetics. The treatise also addresses the nature of compositional process and eighteenth-century concerns about natural and acquired talent and creativity.
