Book Description
Excerpt from Archives of Ophthalmology, Vol. 11: Edited in English and German In beginning the eleventh volume, the editors desire to state that the general plan and the form of the Archives has always remained the same, but from the fourth number of the previous volume (Dec, 1881) an important change has been introduced in the Report on the Progress of Ophthalmology. While preserving its systematic arrangement, the report is now much more elaborate, and follows the original publications at a shorter interval. For that purpose the number of collaborators has been increased and their work organized according to a definite plan. The whole range of the current ophthalmological literature has been divided for reviews as follows: Dr. H. Magnus, lecturer at the University of Breslau (22 Tauentzien Strasse): 1. General Ophthlamological Literature: a. d104-books (not abstracts, but notes pointing out what is new and characteristic). b. Monographs and papers on historical, statistical, and general subjects; reports of societies and hospitals. c. Periodicals on our specialty (short notices of their character, time and place of publication, the titles of the original papers, with the names of their authors in brackets). 2. General Pathology, Diagnosis, and Therapeutics, including new instruments, apparatus, and remedies. 3. Normal Anatomy and Physiology, including color-blindness. Book Description
Electroretinography (ERG) is a non-invasive electrophysiological method which provides objective information about the function of the retina. Advanced ERG allows to assay the different types of retinal receptors and neurons in human and animal models. This book presents contributions on the recent state of the ERG. The book is divided into three parts. The first, methodological part, reviews standard methods and normatives of human ERG, reports about the advanced spatial, temporal and spectral methods of stimulation in human ERG, and deals with the analysis of the multifocal ERG signal. The second part deals with the ERG in different diseases of the human visual system and in diabetes. The third part presents the ERG in the standard animal models of human retinal disease: mouse, rat, macaque and fruitfly.

Book Description
Excerpt from The American Journal of Ophthalmology, Vol. 11: January, 1894 When Miss X. Was first seen, December 3, 1892, the condi tion of affairs was well described by her oculist, a part of whose letter begins this article. I have chosen this quotation as an introduction to these remarks, inasmuch as it serves to accentuate a point I wish to make in regard to the continuance of headaches in the presence of muscular anomalies. Reading had become impossible with or without glasses for any at tempt to read brought on syncope of the retina, every thing would become black as midnight before the eyes and noth ing of the surroundings was visible. These attacks lasted a minute or two and would then pass off; to be renewed when ever a fresh attempt was made to use the eyes. Blue glasses were worn to make the light endurable. So sensitive had the retina become to light that throwing a weak gas flame upon the fundus for the purposes ofa brief Ophthalmoscopic exami nation would cause a severe headache which would last for several hours.
