The Abitibi greenstone belt of eastern Canada represents the world's largest Neoarchean terrane of supracrustal rocks. Straddling the border between the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, the belt covers an area that is approximately 700 km from southeast to northwest and 350 km from north to south. The belt is comprised of several major east-trending successions of folded volcanic and sedimentary rocks, with intervening intrusions. The supracrustal rocks of the Abitibi greenstone belt are uniquely well preserved and have mostly been overprinted only at a low metamorphic grade, allowing the study of primary geological relationships.

This book is intended primarily for exploration geologists and post graduate students attending specialist courses in mineral exploration. Exploration geologists are engaged not only in the search for new mineral deposits, but also in the extension and re-assessment of existing ones. To succeed in these tasks, the exploration geologist is required to be a "generalist" of the Earth sciences rather than a specialist. The exploration geologist needs to be familiar with most aspects of the geology of ore deposits, and detailed knowledge as well as experience play an all important role in the successful exploration for mineral commodities. In order to achieve this, it is essential that the exploration geologist be up to date with the latest developments in the evolution of concepts and ideas in the Earth sciences. This bulletin proposes a geological classification of lode gold deposits based largely on the nature of the ore and on the geological settings of the deposits. Sixteen common types of bedrock gold deposits are distinguished and their main geological attributes are summarized. These do not correspond to an equal number of genetic types; many of these deposit types represent different components of larger hydrothermal systems and are genetically related. Most of the deposit types identified are represented by at least one large example (containing over 100 tonnes of gold).
