The NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Face Recognition: From Theory to Applications took place in Stirling, Scotland, UK, from June 23 through July 4, 1997. The meeting brought together 95 participants (including 18 invited lecturers) from 22 countries. The lecturers are leading researchers from academia, govemment, and industry from allover the world. The lecturers presented an encompassing view of face recognition, and identified trends for future developments and the means for implementing robust face recognition systems. The scientific programme consisted of invited lectures, three panels, and (oral and poster) presentations from students attending the AS!. As a result of lively interactions between the participants, the following topics emerged as major themes of the meeting: (i) human processing of face recognition and its relevance to forensic systems, (ii) face coding, (iii) connectionist methods and support vector machines (SVM), (iv) hybrid methods for face recognition, and (v) predictive learning and performance evaluation. The goals of the panels were to provide links among the lectures and to emphasis the themes of the meeting. The topics of the panels were: (i) How the human visual system processes faces, (ii) Issues in applying face recognition: data bases, evaluation and systems, and (iii) Classification issues involved in face recognition. The presentations made by students gave them an opportunity to receive feedback from the invited lecturers and suggestions for future work.

Depuis plusieurs dizaines d'années, la reconnaissance automatique du locuteur (RAL) fait l'objet de travaux de recherche entrepris par de nombreuses équipes dans le monde. La majorité des systèmes actuels sont basés sur l'utilisation des Modèles de Mélange de lois Gaussiennes (GMM) et/ou des modèles discriminants SVM, i.e., les machines à vecteurs de support. Nos travaux ont pour objectif général la proposition d'utiliser de nouveaux modèles GMM à grande marge pour la RAL qui soient une alternative aux modèles GMM génératifs classiques et à l'approche discriminante état de l'art GMM-SVM. Nous appelons ces modèles LM-dGMM pour Large Margin diagonal GMM. Nos modèles reposent sur une récente technique discriminante pour la séparation multi-classes, qui a été appliquée en reconnaissance de la parole. Exploitant les propriétés des systèmes GMM utilisés en RAL, nous présentons dans cette thèse des variantes d'algorithmes d'apprentissage discriminant des GMM minimisant une fonction de perte à grande marge. Des tests effectués sur les tâches de reconnaissance du locuteur de la campagne d'évaluation NIST-SRE 2006 démontrent l'intérêt de ces modèles en reconnaissance.

Cette thèse décrit le développement d'un système hybride pour le décodage acoustico- phonétique basé sur la coopération entre réseaux de neurones et programmation dynamique. La première partie est consacrée aux approches et techniques courantes les plus intéressantes pour la reconnaissance automatique de la parole, elle développe principalement la programmation dynamique, les modèles de Markov cachés et les réseaux connexionnistes. Nous présentons ensuite dans une deuxième partie notre modèle. un état de l'art du domaine nous permet de le situer parmi l'ensemble des systèmes hybrides qui ont été récemment développés. notre système met en oeuvre un ensemble de réseaux prédictifs pour capturer la dynamique du signal de parole. Ces réseaux permettent de modéliser des phonèmes et fournissent des scores à un module de programmation dynamique chargé de réaliser la segmentation. L'apprentissage est réalisé de façon itérative par des algorithmes de gradient stochastique. Nous développons une interprétation statistique du système qui permet d'établir les liens avec des approches markoviennes. Nous présentons des versions successives du système qui permettent de tester différentes hypothèses sur l'ensemble des composants: ordre et type de prédiction, discrimination. pour cette dernière. Nous proposons et testons plusieurs critères locaux au niveau des trames et globaux au niveau phonétique et développons les liens avec d'autres approches discriminantes développées en parole. Les différentes versions du système ont été testées sur une base de données internationale qui nous a servi d'étalon, la base Timit. Le système final incorpore des modèles prédictifs avec un contexte gauche-droit et une discrimination réalisant un bon compromis efficacité- coût, ses performances en décodage le placent au niveau de l'état de l'art des systèmes actuels
