Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on Appendicitis The following work on appendicitis has been prompted by the belief that the importance of this affection entitles it to a more thorough and exhaustive study than has usually hereto fore been accorded it. Appendicitis in a general way has been so widely and thoroughly discussed that in its usual forms its diagnosis is comparatively devoid of difficulty. No inflamma tory affection of the abdominal cavity, however, is capable of such varied symptoms and of so many serious complications, all of which demand the most thorough knowledge for their proper treatment. Book Description
Excerpt from Appendicitis and Other Diseases of the Vermiform Appendix I will avail myself of this opportunity to say a few words relative to the illustration of medical works and the proper use of good figures. The changes in the appearance of an organ brought about by disease are often manifested in such delicate deviations from the normal topog raphy that it requires the hand and eye of a genuine artist, and one who is also a well-informed anatomist and careful pathologist, to represent the morbid condition accurately. The sense of vision, when unaided, often fails to grasp the significance with completeness, and in such a case the true artist will palpate the fresh specimen and then represent the combined results of sight and touch. The superficial structure alone is frequently insufficient to demonstrate the character of the specimen, and the artist must find means of exhibiting the surface relations in association with the interior. This can be done: (1) by inserting lines, (2) by cutting away portions of the surface and thus displaying the depth, (3) by magnifying the organ and drawing it as though translucent, and (4) by explanatory diagrams, cross-sections. Etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book Description
Excerpt from A Review of the History and Literature of Appendicitis In direct opposition to the modern tendency to re move the appendix whenever feasible, and vainly attempting to stem the tide, we find Barton,21 as late as 1894, and a few others even more recently, preach ing the doctrine of leaving the appendix in operations for acute appendicitis, claiming better results from this practice. That this claim does not hold good in the work of the better operators goes without saying. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Appendicitis: A Plea for Immediate Operation From every aspect, it seems to me, it is best to operate immediately the disease is diagnosed, and it is in the hope of rendering this opinion more widely acceptable that I have written this monograph. I do not claim to have written a complete Essay on appendicitis. On the contrary, I have desired to treat the interesting and important subject from one point of view only. And to insist once more that safety in the treatment of appendicitis can be obtained only by early recognition of the disease and by prompt operation. Book Description
Excerpt from Appendicitis: The Etiology, Hygienic and Dietetic Treatment To understand the cause of appendicitis we must go back to the beginning, and when we do we find that it starts just where all diseases start, namely, where health leaves off! When the laws of health are broken for the first time, it can be said that the individual has started on the road of ill health. How fast he will travel and just what will be the character of the disease he meets with will depend upon his constitution, inheritance, environment and education. Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on Appendicitis and Notes on Other Subjects Eight years ago, when there was confusion in antiseptic methods Of wound treatment, i presented a little book, which was accepted because it told of one way for accomplishing certain ends. At the present time, while there is confusion of ideas on the subject of appendicitis, it is perhaps a favorable time for blazing one clear trail through the subject in a similar way. In the matter of Operative procedures, I have due respect for methods which are different from my own, believing that in the art Of surgery every surgeon is a law unto himself, and that 'e knows the factors of his own success. This collection of ectures includes the substance of my teaching on the subject of appendicitis at the post-graduate Medical School in New York and I have added a series Of notes on other subjects which have received little attention in literature, but which have interested my class.
