The Massachusetts Historical Society
Author: Louis Leonard Tucker
Publisher: Massachusetts Historical Society
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 710
Book Description
When Jeremy Belknap and seven associates met in Boston on January 24, 1791, to establish the Massachusetts Historical Society, there was nothing like it anywhere in North America. Belknap, concerned that accident and carelessness were jeopardizing America's documentary heritage, proposed an organization to provide a secure repository for rare manuscripts and printed works and a publication program to "multiply the copies" of these valuable items. The Society that eight Boston gentlemen created that evening was the first institution anywhere for "the collection and preservation of materials for a political and natural history of the United States". The Massachusetts Historical Society: A Bicentennial History, 1791-1991, is a candid and detailed account of this remarkable institution's first two centuries. Despite its location and its name, the Society has never been a provincial institution, dedicated to chronicling the story of a single city or state. Through its incomparable library and publications, as well as through the writings of such illustrious members as Belknap, Francis Parkman, William Hickling Prescott, Samuel Eliot Morison, and scores of modern scholars, the Society has been - and continues to be - a profound influence on the study of a nation's history.

The Mashpee Indians
Author: Jack Campisi
Publisher: Syracuse University Press
ISBN: 9780815625957
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
The Mashpee Indians have occupied the same area of Cape Cod for more than 350 years and have adjusted and maintained their identity despite the cultural and political changes imposed upon them from the time of early European contact. Central to this ethnohistory is the question of the meaning of the word tribe, a question that was raised in the tribe's 1977 suit against the town and private landholders of Mashpee, Massachusetts. The Mashpees based their land-recovery claim on the provisions of the Indian Trade and Intercourse Act of 1790, which protected the land of any Indian tribe or nation. But the jury found that the Mashpees were not a tribe, and the U.S. District Court judge therefore ruled that the Mashpees lacked standing to sue for land taken from them in contravention of federal law. Campisi reconstructs the trial and provides a detailed history of the Mashpees based on archival research, ethnographic fieldwork, and the documents collected during the tribe's suit. Since the trial, use of the term tribe has taken on increased importance in federal-Indian relations. There are nearly three hundred recognized tribes in the United States that are affected by changes in the definition of tribe, and over one hundred Indian tribes are now seeking federal recognition.
