Book Description
Excerpt from How to Collect, Old Furniture I have endeavoured to trace the changes in style and fashion from Antique to Mediaeval, from Mediaeval to Renaissance, and from Renais sance to Modern, but in the following notes I have attempted to give the reader some descriptions of the various kinds of furniture, made in different countries, from the sixteenth to the middle of the nineteenth century, omitting the earlier periods. As examples of the latter are seldom seen except in museums, they are, for all practical purposes, unobtainable by the collector of ordinary means. I have tried to convey by explanatory hints and suggestions, advice which may enable the reader to select the example of the period he is in search of, and avoid the imitation and the sham. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Oak Furniture Occasionally it has happened that spurious (or mainly spurious) rarities have escaped challenge, and have appeared somehow in illustrated works on the subject of ancient furniture as articles of rare interest. These also, in spite of their ambiguous origin, have not escaped duplication, and the result has been a continuous declension, tending much to mystify the embryo collector with a little knowledge as to styles. Avowed and open reproduction of furniture on antique lines, manufactured from old beams and timbers reaved from barns and housebreakers' debris, is at the present time carried on with a good deal of ingenuity, and it is not infrequently remarked among the Philistines that such skilful imitations must detract from the value of original pieces. A greater fallacy never existed. Each one of these faked reproductions could be successfully refuted by the expert connoisseur, and as a parallel it may be remarked that the modern reproduction of ushabtiu and scarabs by thousands has never deteriorated the value of one single true piece dear to Egyptologists. Book Description
Over 1700 of Skibinski's line drawings present a visual approach to the identification of antique furnishings. The book is arranged in chronological sequences (17th century through the early 20th century) by type of furniture, from tables and settees to desks and bookcases. Butler and Johnson have included some important information for the novice and the experienced collector: the sources of furniture used as models for the illustrations; lists of museums, art galleries, and special displays of outstanding collections of furniture; a selected bibliography and a glossary; the anatomy of a piece of furniture; and a brief history of the periods of furniture and furniture makers. Highly recommended for public libraries and other subject collections.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Present State of Old English Furniture This book is the outcome, therefore, of a desire to help the collector by pointing out the lines along which the Author worked and which have led him to the conclusions presented in these pages, so that the amateur may begin his career as a collector with a certain knowledge which the author ventures to think could otherwise only be obtained by long experience. The Author wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness to all those who have so kindly permitted the illustration of pieces of furniture from their collections, and especially to Mr. Percival D. Griffiths, who has been more than generous in this respect. His thanks are also due to Mr. J. De Haan, for some valuable information concerning recipes used by the imitator; to Mr. Cooper of Messrs. Cooper 65 Humphries, for his care and skill in photographing most of the examples illustrated; and, finally, to Mr. J. H. Elder-duncan and Mr. J. Chichele Plowden, for their suggestions during the compilation and revision of the manuscript. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
