In such cases cross references are placed at the end of the paragraph to which they especially pertain. Names, especially in the source material, have been identified and filled out wherever possible. Let ters have been calendared in cases where no calendar was printed with the collection. These calendars, the most important of which are Bayard correspondence, Calhoun correspondence, Chase correspond ence, Murray correspondence, and Texan diplomatic correspondence, can be found through the title Letters. Letters are entered under writer and receiver, and if not calendared under the writer a cross reference is given to the calendar title. Letters hitherto printed are entered usually under the writer; but where there are many written by one person, as in the Calhoun or Chase correspondence, they are entered under the receiver. Reports on the archives of the various States and kindred material are itemized under the names of the States and also given under group and particular topical titles; but as the amount of detailing differs in the reports, the analysis is less minute for some States than for others. Excerpt from Annual Report of the American Historical Association, Vol. 2: For the Year 1900 Wherever, in the course of its work, either commission has come upon material falling within the province of the other, information to that effect has at once been transmitted, and the two bodies have accordingly been able to work in entire harmony and without danger of trespassing upon each other's domain. The vote of the association establishing the commission authorized the appointment of representatives of the commission in the different States. With the vast mass of material to be dealt with, and divided, as it is, among fortyfive States, three Territories, and the District of Columbia, it early became evident that only by availing itself of the services of such State representatives could the commission hope to accomplish any considerable part of the work devolved upon it, and that the time of the members of the commission was likely to be fully engrossed with the general organization and direction of the work, without itself undertaking the actual investigation of records. The commission accordingly began at once the selection of adjunct members in the different States. The labor of selection proved to be very considerable and entailed a large amount of correspondence and personal inquiry. The following persons have thus far accepted appointments as adjunct members in their respective States: Alabama. - Mr. Thomas M. Owen, chairman of the Alabama History Commission, Birmingham. Connecticut. - Mr. Albert C. Bates, secretary of the Connecticut Historical Society and member of the Commission of Public Records, Hartford. Illinois. - Prof. F. W. Excerpt from Annual Report of the American Historical Association for the Year 1916, Vol. 2 of 2: In Two Volumes Notwithstanding these reverses, Hunter continued his political activities with renewed energy and purpose. The two succeeding years marked a period of great activity on the part of the State Rights Party in Virginia. It sought to place its idol, John C. Cal houn in the presidency. Hunter was the recognized leader of the movement and, as such, carried on a large correspondence with numerous local politicians throughout the Union, particularly those of the Tammany Society of New York City. As the campaign pro gressed and as Van Buren's hold upon the Democracy of the country became more and more evident, Hunter and others decided to aban don Calhoun's candidacy and to groom him for the presidential race in 1848. But they were unwilling to take this course without first securing some concessions from the dominant faction of the Democracy in Virginia. Accordingly a compromise was agreed upon whereby Thomas Ritchie, of the Richmond Enquirer, and other State leaders agreed to accept Calhoun's political principles, as a party platform, in exchange for an undivided support for Van Buren's candidacy for the presidency. Hunter and his friend, James A. Seddon, wrote the resolutions committing the Democracy of Virginia to the extreme State rights position. Thus a practically new political party was created, and Hunter and others had no hesitation in affiliating with it and being known henceforth as Democrats.
