Football, unlike baseball, has not yet evolved the official scorer or reporter. The data of the games consist simply of the contemporaneous accounts in the college and public press. The peculiarities of football, the swift and confusing intricacy of its plays, the substitutions and sudden shifting of players make the work of the reporter excessively difficult and at times more or less inaccurate. The line-ups and descriptions of games contained in Part II of this book have necessarily been based upon these accounts. The details of play, however, have been submitted for correction to players who participated in the various games, and the lists of players likewise referred for verification to players and officials of the respective institutions, so that, notwithstanding the difficulties, they are substantially accurate.
