Book Description
Providence House Publishers is pleased to announce the Immediate release of Surgeons at Georgetown: Surgery and Medical Education in the Nation's Capital -- 1849-1969. This history of Georgetown University School of Medicine traces 150 years of revolutions in medical and surgical practice, education, and science. Today, one of the nation's most respected institutions, the medical school began in four candlelit rooms with seven professors, a handful of students, a curriculum only four months long, and virtually no clinical instruction.Covering bloodletting to grave-robbing to the birth of the modern high-tech era, this history focuses on remarkable individuals, especially the surgeons among them, who overcame successive obstacles and dramas to drive Georgetown forward.Patricia Barry is a native of Great Britain now living in the United States. In a long career in journalism, she has authored two previous books and worked as a reporter, columnist, and editor on British newspapers, including seven years as an investigative reporter and feature writer for the London Sunday Times. Although she majored in history at Durham University, England, this is her first historical title. She moved with her husband and three children to Maryland in 1985, and now works as a senior editor and writer specializing in healthcare for the AARP's newspaper in Washington, D.C.

Book Description
Excerpt from Anniversary Tribute to George Martin Kober: In Celebration of His Seventieth Birthday by His Friends and Associates, March 28, 1920 Dr. George M. Kober, Dean of the Medical faculty, Georgetown University, reached the age of 70 years on March 28, 1920. That the day might not pass without some slight testimonial of the admiration and esteem in which he is held by pupils, friends and co-workers in the many fields of his activities, a number of Dr. Kober's associates met on October 24, 1919, and decided to issue an anniversary publi cation, dedicated to him. This Organization Committee consisted of Dr. George Tully Vaughan, Chairman; Mr. Felix Neumann, Secretary; Mr. John Joy Edson, Treasurer; and General Robert E. Noble, Dr. Charles D. Walcott, Dr. W. M. Barton, Dr. J. W. Fewkes, Prof. W. H. Holmes, Dr. Walter Hough, Dr. L. O. Howard, Dr. A. Hrdlicka, Mr. Neil M. Judd and Dr. Truman Michelson. Owing to the shortness of the intervening period and to uncertain ties Of publication, it was considelred advisable to accept the offer of Dr. Ales Hrdlicka, editor of the American Journal of Physical Anthro pology, and issue the first quarterly of that Journal for 1920, as the George M. Kober Anniversary Number. Dr. Kober has been an associate editor of the Journal since its inception. Although Dr. Kober's scientific interests include such divergent subjects as Military Medicine, Occupational and Social Diseases, Hygiene, Tuberculosis, Social Welfare, and Physical Anthropology, the specific character of the American Journal of Physical Anthropology limited contributions to those bearing directly upon the latter title. Book Description
Addressing a field that has been dominated by astronomers, physicists, engineers, and computer scientists, the contributors to this collection raise questions that may have been overlooked by physical scientists about the ease of establishing meaningful communication with an extraterrestrial intelligence. These scholars are grappling with some of the enormous challenges that will face humanity if an information-rich signal emanating from another world is detected. By drawing on issues at the core of contemporary archaeology and anthropology, we can be much better prepared for contact with an extraterrestrial civilization, should that day ever come.

Book Description
Cancer has become a leading cause of death and disability and a serious yet unforeseen challenge to health systems in low-and middle-income countries. A protracted and polarized cancer transition is under way and fuels a concentration of preventable risk, illness, suffering, impoverishment from ill health, and death among poor populations. Closing this cancer divide is an equity imperative. The world faces a huge, unperceived cost of failure to take action that requires an immediate and large-scale global response. Closing the Cancer Divide presents strategies for innovation in delivery, pricing, procurement, finance, knowledge-building, and leadership that can be scaled up by applying a diagonal approach to health system strengthening. The chapters provide evidence-based recommendations for developing programs, local and global policy-making, and prioritizing research. The cases and frameworks provide a guide for developing responses to the challenge of cancer and other chronic illnesses. The book summarizes results of the Global Task Force on Expanding Access to Cancer Care and Control in Developing Countries, a collaboration among leaders from the global health and cancer care communities worldwide, originally convened by Harvard University. It includes contributions from civil society, global and national policy-makers, patients and practitioners, and academics representing an array of fields.
