Book Description
Excerpt from Annals of Ophthalmology and Otology, Vol. 1: A Quarterly Journal of Practical Ophthalmology, Otology, Laryngology, and Rhinology There is no one method of operation for the extraction of cataract suitable for all cases. Good judgment in selecting the method to be adopted is as necessary as the dexterity in making the operation. The choice of operation must depend upon the character of the cataract, and condition of the eye in all its bearings, which can only be deter mined by a careful examination. I have never been able to make a great series of operations by one method in which everything turned out just as was wanted and expected. My experience which has been a long, varied and successful one, almost forces me to doubt many of the long listed favorable reports of the hundreds of cases made success ively and successfully by one method without change or mishap before or after the delivery of the lens. For cosmetic purposes the extraction without iridectomy is no doubt the par excellence of operations, but it is utterly impossible to do so in every case; and as to acuity of vision obtained, I have found it no better than when iridectomy is made. Book Description
Excerpt from Journal of Ophthalmology, Otology and Laryngology, 1889, Vol. 1 Although it hardly seems possible that the future can yield as brilliant results as have distinguished the past, yet the field is still large and full of promise. Mystery sur rounds many physiological questions pertaining to sight, hearing, and vocalization; while the darkness which envelopes many morbid conditions still needs the piercing light of earnest investigation, extended research, and united exper ience to dispel the gloom. Our therapeutic measures are also inadequate to cope with the varying manifestations of disease, and nothing adds more to advancement in this di rection, independent of increased knowledge of the cause and nature of disease, than a comparison of individual experi ences. It is, therefore, urged upon all interested in these special departments to keep careful records of their cases, and to report not only the variations of disease but the re sults of treatment, whether they be failures or successes, as more can often be learned from the most disastrous failure than from the most brilliant success.
