Book Description
Excerpt from Animal Castration This work is not intended for those unacquainted with anatomy, restraint of animals, principles of surgery and asepsis. It is assumed that the student is familiar with anatomy, and no attempt at such instruction has been made. However, anatomy is treated in sufficient detail for accurate description of the technic pertaining to the various operations considered. The reader's familiarity with the restraint of animals being presupposed, tedious recital of modes of restraint has been omitted; but the kind of restraint that will best serve any given operation has been indicated. Since a good working knowledge of the principles, of surgery and asepsis is necessary to comprehend the text, frequent reminders that instruments should be boiled and the operator's hands washed, have been purposely avoided. The selection of instruments is a matter of individual choice or custom, and, therefore, naming the instruments required for each operation described, has been intentionally omitted. This volume is a resume of observations made during ten years' experience in the castration of animals, hi considering the technic of operations, where more than one method is in vogue, the one that has proved the most practicable has been described. The sections on equine umbilical hernia and cesarean operation in the sow have been included because these eases command much of the veterinarian's attention during the season of castration. Book Description
Excerpt from Animal Castration: A Book for the Use of Students and Practitioners To those entrusted with the onerous task of castrating and spaying domestic animals the seantncss of modern literature- especially that printed in English and by American authors - dealing with the subject must have always proved a matter of considerable embarrassment. This universally recognized lack of a well illustrated book on the important subject of unsexing animals has induced the author to write and publish this volume. It is offered with the desire and hope that it will-in a measure at least-close this wide gap in our English speaking literature. Twenty-one years' actual and active experience in city and rural practice as well as several years as a teacher of this par-ticular subject leads me to believe that a text-book well illustrated, written by an American, based on American methods, will lie acceptable to the student and practitioner who really has a desire to become proficient in performing the operations of castration and spaying. The illustrations and text are for the most part original. The methods described are those employed in actual cvery-dav practice by the author. In presenting this volume to the indulgence of veterinarians the author's only regret is that during its preparation be was State Veterinarian of Tennessee, and did not have the time at his disposal to insure the best authorship results. Hence he is constrained to appeal for lenient judgment and criticism on the book prepared under no common stress of duties-administrative, professional, social and political. Book Description
Excerpt from Castration of Domesticated Animals: A d104 Book for Stock Owners, Students of Agriculture, and Veterinarians In writing the present volume it has been the aim of the authors to present the material in such a manner that it may readily be grasped by the lay mind, and those without previous training in anatomy or surgical technique. In view of the fact that a correct expression of the authors' opinion demands the use of certain professional and technical terms, though these have been eliminated in so far as possible, it has been deemed advisable to include short chapters on the surgical anatomy of the parts, supplemented by photographs and hand drawings. In order to obtain a correct idea regarding the subject of castration it is desirable, though not absolutely essential, that all the chapters be perused and the illustrations studied, as there is considerable correlation between the various parts of the text. The admonition that "there is no short cut to knowledge" is well to bear in mind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Short and Complete Explanation of Farmer Miles' Methods of Animal Castration, Spaying: And After Treatment, With Illustrations I have never seen but three or four horses that I could not get the twitch on while standing. The twitch loop should be over the left hand; then gently grasp all of the upper lip you can, and, with a slow movement, twist the twitch until it binds the nose lightly; then, with both hands on the twitch, turn slow/y, still tighter, until the colt raises his head and winks his eye, then stop and turn the small end of the twitch slowly up beside the halter and tie it there with the long strings on the small end of the twitch in a double bow - knot. Now ask the man that is to hold the colt's head while casting him, Please do not touch the twitch until we are through operating on him. In common castration of colts and stallions, after trying all the different methods known, I have done the most natural thing, I think, with my own inven tions. I have made a choice of all other methods for my own use, and this little book is intended as a full expose and explanation of my present meth ods and practice To meet a demand for my printed methods, my ropes and instruments are shown, so as to more fully explain my use of them. Book Description
Excerpt from Dehorning Cattle, Castration of Bulls, Cattle Sheds, and Warm Drinking Water Gentle reader: We sometimes have to do those things we would not; we then proceed to make a virtue of the necessity. The writer has been beset and besieged by hundreds of letters from Maine to Mexico, asking for information on the subject of dehorning cattle. He has been heralded from one end of the Republic to the other as the Great Dehorner, etc. He has successfully treated his own cattle, of all ages and sizes, for years. He has instructed many others in the art. He talked to the people time and again and never failed to convert his hearers. He has written on the matter in a score of papers and demonstrated the thing again and again in hundreds of cases; perhaps, therefore, if his experience is placed in book form he may not be open to the charge of pedantry in so doing. May the time come, and come speedily, when a horned brute will be as scarce as a Mulley is now. May the time soon come when dehorning will.
