Book Description
Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing. house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 25 (thesis year 1980) a total of 10,308 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 214 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 25 reports theses submitted in 1980, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Description
An investigation of a high-strength, fast setting mixture of methyl methacrylate and dry aggregate was conducted. The resulting polymer-concrete (PC) was very strong, durable, and bonded excellently to concrete. Tests were conducted to determine the variables affecting the polymerization time and strength of polymer-concrete. Field tests were conducted to interstate highways and a major airport taxiway which demonstrated the feasibility of making rapid polymer-concrete repairs at a reasonable cost. Laboratory tests of a 3-foot by 6-foot area repaired by PC and an individual PC slab under repeated loadings of simulated truck and aircraft traffic demonstrated the excellent strength and durability of the material. A cost analysis found the cost of monomer to be approximately $10/cubic foot for most repairs. (Author).

Book Description
An investigation was made to determine the feasibility of using polymer-concrete (PC) for rapid repair of airfield pavements. The polymer-concrete studied was a mixture of dry aggregate and a methyl methacrylate monomer. Tests were conducted to isolate the variables that affect the strength and polymerization time of PC. Laboratory and field tests were conducted to test the strength, durability, and feasibility of polymer-concrete repairs. The major variables affecting the polymerization time of PC were found to be temperature and chemical composition. Monomer formulations were developed that permitted polymer-concrete to be polymerized in less than one hour at a temperature range of 0 to 100 F. An investigation into the variables that affect strength resulted in several findings. The tests showed that dry aggregate (less than 1% moisture) is very important for strength. The strength of PC was found to increase with stronger aggregate and smaller pore volume. The temperature of the polymer-concrete was found to affect the strength to a great extent. The higher the temperature the greater the reduction of strength. (Author).

Book Description
The subject of polymer concrete (PC) has generated a lot of interest among researchers during the past decade. This is due to the many advantages that polymer concrete pavement offers compared to regular portland cement concrete. The advantages of polymer concrete, when compared to portland cement concrete include, quick curing and setting, reduced moisture sensitivity and permeability and improved mechanical properties resulting in reduced pavement thickness to support the same load. These advantages will lead to attractive life cycle cost benefits. Material properties and mix designs for PC with epoxy, methylmethacrylate (MMA) and Polyester as the binder material have been investigated and presented in part I of this report. Part II contains pavement thickness design charts, developed for various aircraft, quality control methods, construction procedures and cost analysis. It has been shown in this study that increased material cost of PC can be offset by the reduced thickness of the pavement. In order to develop life cycle cost information, it is necessary to obtain field performance data of PC pavement, especially in the composite design mode. Keywords: Compressive stress, Modulus of elasticity. (kr).

Book Description
Proper maintenance and repair of concrete airfield pavements is critical to the longevity of these pavements and their ability to safely support airport operations over their design life. However, these activities can be costly and operationally disruptive. The TRB Airport Cooperative Research Program's ACRP Research Report 234: Rapid Slab Repair and Replacement of Airfield Concrete Pavement is designed to assist airport personnel and engineering consultants in selecting and executing rapid slab repair and replacement (RSRR) projects and to provide relevant information for airport maintenance personnel performing RSRR work.

Book Description
Water-compatible polymer concrete (PC) formulations have been developed which appear to have potential for use in all-weather rapid repair procedures for bomb-damaged runways. Formulations consisting of furfuryl alcohol, water-saturated aggregate, dry silica flour, promoters, and catalysts produced composites with properties suitable for repair purposes when mixed and polymerized at temperatures from -20 to 30 C. Calcium-unsaturated polyester complexed PC also produced excellent properties. However, the early strength criteria, (2000 psi (13.78 MPa) at 1 hr) and other requirements such as compatibility of the formulation with water and practical working times could be attained only at temperatures>20 deg C. This system can be polymerized under water. Studies of the polymerization reaction mechanisms, materials properties, costs, and potential placement methods were performed. (Author).
