Synoptic and Dynamic Climatology
Author: Roger G. Barry
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134969740
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 633
Book Description
Synoptic and Dynamic Climatology provides the first comprehensive account of the dynamical behaviour and mechanisms of the global climate system and its components, together with a modern survey of synoptic-scale weather systems in the tropics and extratropics, and of the methods and applications of synoptic climate classification. It is unrivalled in the scope and detail of its contents. The work is thoroughly up to date, with extensive bibliographies by chapter. It is illustrated with nearly 300 figures and plates. *Part 1 provides an introduction to the global climate system and the space-time scales of weather and climate processes, followed by a chapter on climate data and their analysis *Part 2 describes and explains the characteristics of the general circulation of the global atmosphere and includes the nature and causes of global teleconnection patterns *Part 3 discusses synoptic weather systems in the extratropics and tropics and satellite-based climatologies of synoptic features. It also describes the applications of synoptic climatology and summarises current climatic research and its directions.

Climate Dynamics of the Tropics
Author: S. Hastenrath
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401131562
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 507
Book Description
The first edition of my book "Climate and Circulation of the Tropics" was reasonably up to date to the middle of 1985. In a second printing in 1988 it was possible to complete a few literature references and to correct some misprints. However, vigorous research has taken place over the past five years in various areas of tropical climate dynamics, especially in the atmosphere-ocean mechanisms of climate anomalies, climate prediction, ocean circulation, and paleoclimates. Promising progress has also been made in the application of general circulation modelling to tropical climate problems. In the present second edition, named "Climate Dynamics of the Tropics", I have attempted to incorporate much of the recent work to late 1990. Chapters 8 and 9 have been essentially re-written, and major additions have been made to Chapters 4 and 12 in particular. I would like to acknowledge the continued support by the U.S. National Science Foundation over the past five years. B. Parthasarathy, Poona, and H. Lessmann, San Salvador, sent me updates of data series not easily accessible. I have benefitted from discussions with numerous colleagues in the United States and overseas. In the preparation of this second edition, Marilyn Wolff patiently transferred my illegible hand-written drafts onto word processor. Dierk Polzin and Dan Skemp assisted me with the creation of the page masters and the subject index and Christopher Collimore with the author index.

Physical Climatology
Author: Benja Rambeloson
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781681175782
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 316
Book Description
"The gaseous envelop surrounding the earth is called atmosphere while the science dealing with the study of the atmospheric components and characteristics is called meteorology and climatology. Climatology is the scientific study of climate and is a major branch of meteorology. Climatology is the tool that is used to develop long-range forecasts. There are three principal approaches to the study of climatology: physical, descriptive, and dynamic. The physical climatology approach seeks to explain the differences in climate in light of the physical processes influencing climate and the processes producing the various kinds of physical climates, such as marine, desert, and mountain. Physical climatology covenants with explanations of climate rather than with presentation. Physical Climatology deals with the interpretation of factors responsible for the spatial and temporal variations of exchange of air circulations, heat and humidity. It studies various elements of weather namely insolation, temperature, precipitation, fogs, visibility etc. Different elements are formed due to combinations of these weather elements. The occurrences of different combinations of these weather elements are accomplished through different processes and mechanisms. Thus, these processes of exchange of heat, humidity, and momentum between atmosphere and earths surface are also studied thoroughly. It is thus, evident that physical climatology studies the factors and processes of regional variations of climatic conditions."

Teleconnections Linking Worldwide Climate Anomalies
Author: Michael H. Glantz
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521106849
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Teleconnections is a central concept in the scientific search for an improved understanding of potential linkages between weather and climate anomalies that occur over relatively large distances. The editors of this 1991 volume brought together contributions from experts in the field, which together provide a comprehensive review of this important subject. This book will be of importance to all professional scientists and researchers in climatology and meteorology, particularly those concerned with air-sea interactions and their environmental impacts and the physical basis for and societal responses to forecasting. Graduate students in environmental science, meteorology and climate-related impact assessments will also find the book useful.

Climate Change
Author: Thomas W. Giambelluca
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 498
Book Description
Integrating issues of climate modelling, ecological and human dimensions of climate change, and policy implications, this volume addresses the critical problems of climate change from a Southern Hemisphere perspective. However, the spatial focus in the book is not defined just by latitude, but also by geopolitical criteria: encompassing the developing world, the tropics north of the equator, as well as regions south of the equator. The book begins by examining the geographic and geopolitical plurality of the Earth, including north and south distinctions and the science/policy plurality. A hemispheric perspective on coupled climate modelling is then discussed, providing a state-of-the-art summary of climate modelling as it pertains to the Southern Hemisphere. In addition, the book examines the interaction of humanity, the biosphere and the atmosphere, discussing the biospheric effects of climate change, possible climatic impacts of biospheric change, particularly tropical deforestation and the human health implications of climate and climate change.
