Excerpt from An Introduction to the Science and Practice of Qualitative Chemical Analysis Inorganic The principal aim of this volume is to guide the student towards the attainment of systematic work in his qualitative analysis - to help him to learn a sound method rather than to fill his mind with innumerable isolated reactions. For teaching the method of work, it is not only unnecessary but undesirable to attempt to include either all classes of compounds, or all the reactions of those that are considered. The selection made is that which long experience has shown to be the best for the purpose, and at the same time it includes all the more commonly occurring inorganic substances. The reactions described are not only those utilised in the tabulated method given, but sufficient for the more advanced student to avail himself of in devising other methods in specific cases that can be advantageously treated in a special or different manner. A perfect system is an elastic one that may be adapted to various circumstances, and the student is encouraged to consider the tables given as guides rather than rigid rules, when he has had a little experience and can judge for himself. There is a great deal more given in the book than it would be desirable for a student to actually confirm for himself while going over the reactions for the first time. Those parts that he should experimentally verify as far as he can before beginning any separations are indicated by asterisks, which signify that he should confirm for himself the statements in the paragraph so marked until he comes to the asterisk. Excerpt from Qualitative Chemical Analysis, Organic and Inorganic Probably all teachers of chemistry are familiar with two classes of student: (I) book students, i.e. students who have obtained their knowledge of chemistry entirely by reading or by hearing lectures; (2) laboratory students, those who, by use of a merely outline book or chart, and by attention to details of experiment, have obtained the whole of their knowledge in the laboratory. The first class of student, if brought into the laboratory, is unable to carry out a single experiment without bungling. The second, although he may be able to carry out experiments with machine-like precision, from a sheet of instructions, is quite at sea when questioned upon the underlying theoretical principles. One of the great difficulties in teaching chemistry is to get students to apply their theoretical knowledge to aid them in their practical work, and, on the other hand, to bring their practical knowledge to bear in the elucidation of theoretical problems. The theoretical knowledge is generally kept rigidly apart from the facts practically gained, so that the student loses all the mutual help which the two branches of study afford each other. It arose out of the difficulty experienced in attempting to give a thorough course of qualitative analysis in limited time to large classes of students. The smaller text-books on the subject are too elementary in character to use in connection with such a course; they devote too little attention to the precautions to be observed to insure delicacy of the reactions, to the difficulties encountered by the student in actual work, and to the modifications of the process required in special cases. On the other hand, the manual of Fresenius, though complete and very valuable as a work of reference, is confusing to beginners on account of the complexity of its arrangement and insufficient explanation of the purposes of the various operations. The attempt has been made in the following pages to present an almost equally thorough scheme of qualitative analysis in a more concise and readily intelligible form. The process of analysis here given was based originally on that of Fresenius, but it has undergone a number of important modifications suggested by experience with it in the laboratory. It aims rather to lead the student to gain that truth himself as nearly as possible at first hand and as a product of his own thinking.
