Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to English Literature Fifteen years ago, Mr. Henry Holt asked me to arrange a series of representative selections from English literature in chronological order, and to connect them with such biographical and historical matter as might be found necessary for an understanding of them, and of their relation to national and literary history. The result of this request was a book, Representative English Literature, which appeared in 1892. In this book, owing to the large proportion of space taken up by selections, the historical sketch was necessarily very brief, and a few years later, at Mr. Holt's suggestion, I prepared a second book, An Introduction to English Literature, based on the first, in which the selections were omitted and the historical outline revised and considerably expanded. Two years later this second book enlarged by the addition of further biographical and other matter. In the present book the subject is treated with still greater fulness but upon the same general plan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to the English Classics The purpose of this book is to stimulate, in teachers and students alike, interest in the English Classics selected for use in schools, and to suggest various methods by which these masterpieces may be profitably studied. The book embodies the actual experience of teachers in the classroom, in that the analyses of most of the volumes studied and the accompanying questions have been prepared by men and women who have themselves edited one or more of the Classics and have actually taught them. The work of these collaborators has been brought into some uniformity of method, but Without injuring, it is hoped, the suggestiveness and variety and particular method of each contributor. Book Description
Excerpt from Introduction to English Literature: Including a Number of Classic Works, With Notes This work is an attempt to solve the problem of teach ing English literature. The ordinary manuals, it is be lieved, have ceased to give general satisfaction. This result was inevitable; for the principle upon which they are based is fundamentally at variance with educational science. While containing a great deal about English literature, these works do not teach English literature itself; and it is not unusual for a student to finish them without being acquainted with a single classic work, or having acquired the least fondness for sterling literature. It is the recognition of these facts that has caused many teachers to desire and seek something better. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Book Ways: An Introduction to the Study of English Literature Most teachers of literature have experienced the sur prised and quickened interest with which children receive the works of living authors. The connection' between the authors of to-day and earlier writers is in this way made more vital and more real. Book Description
Excerpt from Everyday Classics: Eighth Reader, the Introduction to Literature Book Eight of the Everyday Classics is an introduction to literature. In carrying out this purpose it completes the aim of the series, to put before the pupil selections which are both excellent and familiar, which form a valued part of the heritage of the nation and the race. In the earlier books, however, it has often seemed advisable to direct the attention to the heroes described, the stories told, and the morals enforced, rather than to a study of literary excellence. This book, more distinctly than any of its predecessors, is devoted to the study of literature. It seeks to encourage a knowledge and appreciation of the best that has been thought and imagined. The Seventh Book offered an account of the history and ideals of our own country as set forth by its chief authors. In the Eighth Book we go to the great masters of the world, and especially to those authors who from Shakespeare to Tennyson have been the glory of the English language. These two books thus complete the basic course in reading on the plan of the Everyday Classics, and they prepare the way for the more thorough study and appreciation of both American and English literature. They are especially adapted for use in Junior High Schools. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to Poetry: For Students of English Literature Chapter Four, on the fundamental problems of English rhythm, deals with the point of greatest difficulty in the whole range of the subject, and is to be regarded, not as making claim to originality, but as the most individual portion of this book. SO recently as the time of publication of the earlier volume, English Verse, it seemed impracticable to dogmatize on the elements of our metres, with any hope of doing more than adding another note to the discordant jangle of voices on that dangerous sub ject. But there is evidence that conditions have be! Come more hopeful; recent writers have seemed to tend more and more toward agreement on certain substantial principles and while one must still wait, no doubt, for a generally accredited science of English prosody, it is perhaps safeito offer for the use of students a rather more pretentious body of doctrine than would have been reasonable hereto. Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Literature I must therefore ask the reader to remember that this book is planned as a guide and companion to his own study, and that, while I hope it may be interesting and suggestive in itself, the value of the things said in it must ultimately be sought in their application. It will be found that little place is given to questions of abstract aesthetics. These, as well as all details of a purely scholastic character, have been purposely avoided, as my desire throughout has been to make my volume literature is primarily a means of enjoyment and a help to life. I have to thank my friend, the Rev. Albert E. Sims, for the invaluable assistance which, as on various former occasions, he has again rendered me in my proof-reading and in the settlement of the many troublesome little points which are certain to arise when a book of this kind is passing through the press. Book Description
Excerpt from A First Book in English Literature IN this shorter book I have not hesitated to make what use I could of my earlier Introduction to English Litera ture, but I have found that comparatively little of it was suited to my present purpose. The general plan, and chief chronological divisions have been retained, but apart from this the present book is largely new, written in a simple style and designed to meet a different need. There is less literary criticism and relatively more bi ography, while many authors and books mentioned in the larger work are here barely alluded to or passed over altogether. As far as possible the mere enumeration of authors and titles has been avoided, and the student has been led to concentrate his attention upon a compara tively small number of authors of the first importance. Like its predecessor this book aims to treat the history of English literature in its broad relations to the social, religious, and political history of England, and of Europe; to make the student realize that literature is a vital and significant part of a nation's history, and one of the most intimate revelations of the national life and aspiration. It tries to show him that the literary history of England is not the record of a meaningless and fortuitous succes sion of men and events, but rather a continuous and fas cinating story, in which each age is largely the product of those that have gone before it, and in which the present is in a real and apparent way the daughter of the past. Book Description
Excerpt from The Study of English Literature It is no light matter to present within five hundred and fifty pages the story of the imaginative life of a nation as found in its literature. No one can hope for absolute success in such a task. The excuse for adding to the already long list of histories of English literature is that the subject is inexhaustible. The point of view of each new narrator must bring into relief fresh aspects of the great story, and suggest, at least in detail, new lines of approach for the student. This book aims, like all modern text-books, not to supplant, but to accompany the direct and copious reading of texts. The Suggestions for Class Work and for Talks from the Teacher are not merely theoretical; they may in some cases appear at first too advanced, but they have been well tested in a practical experience of over ten years in the class-room. Their application in detail will of course depend on the grade of the class. If the teacher of literature is not prepared to give certain lectures, a teacher of history or of art in the same school may well be asked to do so.
