O leito da rocha viva da regiao e formado por gnaisses no terco sul-ocidental; xistos, resultantes de rochas sedimentares, no centro; e rochas sedimentares com dobras complexas no terco oriental. As rochas sao profundamente intemperadas. Encontram-se regolito de 10 a 60 pes de profundidade, em media, exceto nas areas litossolicas; o regolito encontra-se a maior profundidade na superficie de erosao mais antiga. A regiao e um peneplano intermitentemente levantado que apresenta distintas superficies de erosao. As duas superficies superiores, provavelmente do Terciario, sao designadas como primeira superficie de erosao (nivel do peneplano ou chapada) e segunda superficie de erosao, respectivamente, neste estudo. Uma terceira superficie de erosao, provavelmente doQuaternario, e representada em vertentes de vales com matas. Ocorre relicto de canga endurecida como uma orla quase continua, embora estreita, ao longo das margens dos remanescentes da primeira superficie de erosao, exceto nos testemunhos e divisores estreitos desta superficie. Nao ocorre nas superificies de erosaomais recentes nem como um lencol geral capeando a antiga superficie peneplana. Levanta-se a hipotese de que a canga se tenha formado apos o primeiro levantamento e depois do inicio da disseccao parcial. Levantamento posterior e uma consequente mudanca nos movimentos laterais de agua da subsuperficie pararam essencialmente a formacao da canga.
