Book Description
Objective is to study both petroleum-based oils and synthetic fuels in spray combustion, by using advanced optical diagnostic techniques to study the processes of fuel injection and atomization, droplet ignition, and spray flame combustion. During this period, efforts were focused on the completion of the cold spray test facility, the design of the monodisperse droplet combustor, and the construction of an oil burner with the gathering of preliminary holography data. (DLC).

Book Description
During the initial report period, efforts were directed primarily towards the design and construction of the cold spray rig. Air flow, fuel flow, and optical requirements were identified. These provided the basis for sizing the spray chamber, air flow ducting, blowers, fuel system and general optical configurations. Detailed design of major systems was completed, major hardware components were ordered, and subsystem assembly was initiated. In addition to the planned design and assembly work on the cold spray rig, preliminary laboratory experiments were conducted to help define the optical configuration for both the droplet sizing interferometry (DSI) measurements and the holographic imaging of the (injector) spray formation region. Monodispersed droplet generation techniques needed in Task 2.0 and oil burner designs for the generation of spray flames needed in Task 3.0 were also addressed.
