Book Description
BoldAbstract/bold This study compared the effects of a carbohydrate restriction diet (CRD) and fluid restriction diet (FRD) on physical and cognitive performance. Six wrestlers completed cognitive testing before and after an exercise test circuit (EC) consisting of a sequence of six Wingate tests and seven vertical jump sets and bench press sets. In a randomized crossover design, subjects were tested after both CRD and FRD. The first Wingate performance (mean and peak power) and mean jump height were similar after both diets and showed a similar decline during EC of 9%, 23% and 19%, respectively. The mean jump peak power and work, and bench press power during the first set were greater after FRD compared to CRD, by 23%, 23%, and 15%, respectively. During the EC there was a 30% decline in jump peak power and work, but only with FRD. After EC, simple reaction time was 14% slower with FRD. The percent correct answered in delayed code substitution decreased after EC by 19% with CRD and 16 % with FRD. After EC, salivary cortisol concentration increased with FRD, while salivary alpha amylase increased with CRD. In conclusion, our findings suggest CRD had a greater negative impact on vertical jump and bench press performance than FRD. In contrast FRD had a greater negative impact on Wingate performance than CRD.
