Book Description
Excerpt from Great Epochs in American History, Described by Famous Writers From Columbus to Roosevelt: With Introductions and Explanatory Notes The war was over and, with all its horrors, blessings had come to the Republic. Supreme among these was the assurance that all the States were to remain united, and that slavery was overthrown. Out of the war came seven years later an international event which was to become a milestone on the highway of progress toward the peaceful settlement of disputes among nations - the Treaty of Washington and the Geneva Arbitration, by which what are known as the Alabama claims, were settled in court rather than on battle-fields. Immediately after the war was laid successfully the Atlantic cable, by which the old world and the new, now at last, tho divided by 3,000 miles of water, had almost instantaneous communication one with the other. The same period saw accomplished the purchase of Alaska; for $7,200,000, a territory of 590,000 square miles, or more than the area of the original thirteen States, had been added to the Republic. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life and Epoch of Alexander Hamilton: A Historical Study The writing of this book is the occupation of those days when I am freed from the performance of public duties. The labor is one in which I take delight, and is a source, during vacations, of happiness to me: may the book be one of pleas ure, if not enlightment, to others. Begun on the banks of the Hudson, I continue it here amid the beautiful and superb scenery near the upper Rhone: in that Switzerland to which Hamilton was prepared to emigrate if the revolutionary contest in America had resulted disastrously to the colonists. If this essay to relate the story of Hamilton's life, and to treat of the historical inducements to our national unity, should succeed in gaining the attention of American youth to the studious contemplation of one of the most eminent char acters of their own country, I will feel that I do not fail in another object which I have in View. Book Description
Excerpt from The Jacksonian Epoch This book is an attempt to accomplish two objects: a critical survey of the political history of the United States, particularly in its parliamentary phase, from the Presiden tial candidacy of Jackson to the accession of Tyler, with a preliminary review of the preceding period beginning with the origin of the War of1812; and to exhibit the influence of the men who shaped events. The first permits a rapid and independent treatment of the subject from a new point of view; and the second, the introduction of the personal element, which gives to history its keenest interest and its greatest charm. The epoch treated is the most suggestive and dramatic in our history. It marks the full development of American political methods, and possesses the most distinguished galaxy of public men ever brought together on the politi cal scene in this country. General histories, however useful and excellent, subordinate men, and biographies either mag nify individuals beyond their influence and importance, or do not adequately portray their contemporaries and the general perspective. This book, therefore, is an effort to combine and symmetrize both historical elements in order to present a true and lifelike picture of a most animated political epoch. Book Description
Excerpt from The Tennyson Epoch The series of which this volume is the ninth may he said to have three objects: First, to teach the history of our literature in a rational and orderly manner; second, to illuminate the history of England by exhibiting the thoughts of its men of letters in their own words; and, third, to display, as if in a gallery, some specimens of the inheritance into which every English-reading boy and girl has entered. It has been too long the practice to teach English literature in handbooks which give only the briefest examples, if any, of the works they profess to describe; and our many excellent school anthologies, from their want of a definite historical arrangement, and the absence of prose, fail almost entirely to give a connected view of the development of our language. Now, the history of our literature, falling, as it undoubtedly does, into a series of well-marked periods of excellence, appears to lend itself peculiarly to the historical treatment suggested by the word 'epoch.' In this volume, for reasons given in the Introduction, I have been compelled to include a period which really contains two epochs. My general principles of selection are three - the intrinsic merit and interest of the piece, its convenience for use in schools, and its ability to stand by itself without great detriment from the absence of context. Also I avoid those works which are likely to be read elsewhere. For this reason Dickens, Thackeray, and the novelists generally, are here omitted.
