An Elementary Treatise on the Geometry of Conics
Author: Asutosh Mukhopadhyay
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330334751
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 248
Book Description
Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on the Geometry of Conics This work contains elementary proofs of the principal properties of Conics, and is intended for students who proceed to the study of the subject after finishing the first six books of Euclid: the curves have not, therefore, been defined as the sections of a cone, although that method has the sanction of history and antiquity in its favour; and for the same reason, no use has been made of the method of projections. As regards the arrangement of the subject, I have thought it best to devote separate chapters to the parabola, the ellipse, and the hyperbola. The plan of starting with a chapter on general conics, in which some fundamental propositions arc proved by methods applicable to all the three curves, has no doubt the advantage of securing an appearance of brevity. But, I believe, beginners find the subject more intelligible when the properties of the three curves are discussed separately. Elementary Treatise on Conic Sections and Algebraic Geometry
Author: G. Hale Puckle
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780365212027
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 394
Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Treatise on Conic Sections and Algebraic Geometry: With Numerous Examples and Hints for Their Solution, Especially Designed for the Use of Beginners My chief object was to write with special reference to those difficulties and misapprehensions, which I had found most common to beginners. In the later edition's I have tried, without losing sight of my original purpose, to make the book suitable to the requirements of the time. The present edition has been carefully revised throughout. I have added a considerable amount of new matter, especially in the way of illustrative examples worked out. I have also changed the notation of the General Equation of the Second Order, to that used by Dr Salmon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Classical Algebraic Geometry
Author: Igor V. Dolgachev
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139560786
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 653
Book Description
Algebraic geometry has benefited enormously from the powerful general machinery developed in the latter half of the twentieth century. The cost has been that much of the research of previous generations is in a language unintelligible to modern workers, in particular, the rich legacy of classical algebraic geometry, such as plane algebraic curves of low degree, special algebraic surfaces, theta functions, Cremona transformations, the theory of apolarity and the geometry of lines in projective spaces. The author's contemporary approach makes this legacy accessible to modern algebraic geometers and to others who are interested in applying classical results. The vast bibliography of over 600 references is complemented by an array of exercises that extend or exemplify results given in the book.
