Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2018 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 4, , language: English, abstract: The main objective of this study is to identify factors affecting adoption of high yielding wheat varieties in Mao-Komo district of Benishangul-Gumuz, Ethiopia. Adoption of high yielding wheat varieties is one of the measures presumed to enhance wheat yield in Ethiopia. However, there are several socio-economic and institutional factors that limit the adoption of high yielding wheat varieties. Wheat is one of the major cereals of choice in Ethiopia, dominating food habits and dietary practices, and is known to be a major source of energy and protein in the country. The utilization of wheat has increased due to the growing urbanization and the expansion of agro-industries used as raw material, and also considered to attain food security in Ethiopia. It is also used for traditional foods and the straw is used for animal feed and thatching of roofs. To feed the rapidly growing population and meet the high demand of wheat in the country, it needs to increase the production and yield of wheat. However, increasing yield requires successful adoption of improved agricultural technologies. The present study uses cross-sectional data collected from sample of 174 farm households selected through two-stage stratified random sampling techniques. Descriptive statistics and econometric models are used to analyze the data. Probit model is employed for adoption analyze of high yielding wheat varieties. The probit model result depicts that land holding size, tropical livestock unit, access to agricultural information, frequency of extension contacts, off-farm income, and perception of farmers toward attributes of high yielding wheat varieties affect the likelihood of adoption of high yielding wheat varieties positively and significantly. But sex of household heads and affiliation to organizations has negative and significant effects on the likelihood of adoption of high yielding wheat varieties. The findings suggest that the government and stakeholders should need to focus on improving farm land and livestock productivity, strengthening frequency of extension visits, encouraging participation in off-farm activities, creating reliable information and awareness towards farmers’ perceptions in the area. Finally, further support of high yielding wheat varieties adoption should be given due attention for smallholders.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2018 in the subject Agrarian Studies, Haramaya University, language: English, abstract: White haricot bean is the major source of cash in domestic and international markets and serves as the cheapest source of protein diet for rural households. The double hurdle model and parametric stochastic frontier model of Cobb Douglass type production and cost functions were used to analyze the determinants of adoption and estimate production and cost efficiency scores, respectively. The adoption study revealed that the two decision tiers are independent and the same or different factors affected the two tiers. The decision to adopt is positively and significantly influenced by the frequency of extension contacts, landholding size, agricultural income, perception of the household heads (about price, contribution to soil fertility and nutritional importance), training, and crop diversification; and negatively by distance to market and form of possession of haricot bean plot (tenure). The intensity of adoption is positively affected by non-farm income, contact with NGOs, and negatively with the number of dependents and form of possession of haricot beans plot (tenure). Technical efficiency is significantly and positively influenced by sex (male=1), membership in farmers cooperatives, education of the family, experience in haricot beans farming, use of certified seeds, income from the farm sector and crop diversification; and negatively affected by age of the households. Allocative efficiency differential is significantly and positively influenced by farming experience and household size; and negatively influenced by sex, distance to market and fragmentation of land. Economic efficiency is significantly and positively affected by the education of the family and household size, and negatively by distance to market and fragmentation of land. Provision of improved extension services, enhancing the perceptions on the important attributes of the crop, training, and better access to market are proposed for the first-hand adoption of white haricot beans while works on the creation of alternative sources of income (non-farm activities) contribute more to the intensity of adoption. Supply of certified seeds, education of the households and family members, and access to resources (credit and other inputs, in particular for female-headed households) are proposed to improve the technical efficiency, allocative and economic efficiencies.

Scientific Study from the year 2023 in the subject Agrarian Studies, , course: Agricultural Economics research, language: English, abstract: Production improvement through the use of improved technologies and increasing efficiency of inputs in cereal production in general and wheat production in particular might be an important alternative to settle food security problem in Ethiopia. Wheat is the first cash crop produced in Angecha District, kembata Tambaro zone, with a total area covered of 4567.5ha. But, the efficiency of producers that they could not use available resources on hand was taken as a great attention. So this study was aimed to analyze the levels of technical, allocative and economic efficiencies of wheat producers; and determining factors for inefficiency in farmers’ wheat production by using cross sectional data from randomly selected 123 households in 2018/19 production year. The study used both primary and secondary data sources and stochastic production frontier approach was used to estimate the level of efficiencies. Ordinary least square estimation was used to identify factors that affect inefficiencies of sample farmers’ in study area. The regression model result indicated that input variables like land and seed were the significant variables to increase the yield of wheat output. 55.63%, 55.47% and 30.85% were the estimated mean values of technical, allocative and economic efficiencies respectively, which indicate the presence of inefficiency in wheat production in the study area. Model result indicated that technical inefficiency positively and significantly affected by sex of the household head, and negatively affected by age, farm experience, land fragmentation, credit access and total livestock unit. Similarly, allocative inefficiency positively and significantly affected by sex and negatively by credit access and total livestock holdings. In addition, economic inefficiency negatively and significantly affected by credit access and total livestock holdings. The policy measures implied from the results include: working further for quality seed and sustainable land management, expansion of gender sensitive and youth based strengthening of the extension services and trainings, strengthening the existing credit institutions services, and expansion of new livestock technologies in the study area.
