[Abstract] This research paper describes the experience of a mother's decision to return to work after the birth of her first child. Resulting from my study of and readings in humanistic psychology I chose the perrceptual model for my research. I believed that this model with its core-components, perceptual field, perceptions, and the internal frame of reference enabled me to identify with and experience more fully the phenomenon under study. To gain information for my study I reviewed the relevant professional literature. The study consisted of seven professional women ranging in age from 25-33 years. Data was collected from the participants, written description of the experience, experiential activities, and personal interviews conducted over a two month period. An analysis of the data revealed several dimensions of the inner sturggles experienced. There was a strong dissatisfaction with the maternal role. The first-time mother wanted to experience life to its fullest. She resented society's stereo-typing of the "good mother" at home and "bad mother" at work. However, part of her believed that she would be putting her child1s development at risk by returning to work. She refused to accept or own these feelings. The ideas she held of the modern mother were in direct contrast with her ideas about the traditionalist family in which she was raised. This led to an acute period of depression and a questioning of her identity and worth as a person. She desperately wanted to return to work but feared the consequences of her decision. Guilt and loneliness pervaded. The actual return to work initiated an internal process which enabled her to see things as they really existed for her. She became free and was able to explore her feelings and their origins. Despite uncertainties she chose to return to work. Her courage and determination helped her to understand her experience in more realistic terms.
