Book Description
Excerpt from Timber Resources for America's Future The report of the Timber Resource Review is in the nature of a State-of - the-union message by the Forest Service on our national timber supplies. This comprehensive appraisal of the timber situation in the United States was started early in 1952. About a year and a half was devoted to planning the project; a year to field surveys and collection of data; a year to compila tion, interpretation, and preparation of the pre liminary report; and another year and a half to review and revision of the preliminary report and preparation of this final report. The Timber Resource Review is the latest in a series of overall timber appraisals in which the Forest Service has shared. The most recent one prior to this study was in 1945. One of the unique features of the present undertaking is that it was planned and executed in the field with the wide spread collaboration of a great number of States, forest industries, and individuals. Although this has engendered some delays, they have been more than offset by better planning, by more intensive surveys than the Forest Service could have under taken by itself, and it is hoped by more widespread understanding and acceptance of the findings. Book Description
From Coastal Wilderness to Fruited Plain is an account of the making of a large part of the American landscape following European settlement. Drawing upon land survey records and early travellers' accounts, Dr Whitney reconstructs the 'virgin' forests and grasslands of the north-eastern and central United States during the pre-settlement period. He then documents successively the clearance and fragmentation of the region's woodlands, the harvest of the forest and its game, the ploughing of the prairies, and the draining of wetlands. The degree to which these activities altered the soil, climate, plant and animal communities, and water cycle are evaluated, and the sustainability of present-day ecosystems is brought into question in this account.

Book Description
Excerpt from Central States Timber Resources A final revised report is scheduled for publication and release to the public in 1957. The trr combines information derived from special field studies with that obtained from assembling and updating the best data already available. Area and volume statistics were adjusted to January 1, 1953; timber cut and utilization figures are for the calendar year 1952. The task was made possible through excellent cooperation between federal and state agencies and private industries. This report is for managers of forest land, forest industry personnel, and all others interested in the forests of the Central States. The statistics presented here are taken from the tre data except for those that pertain to Iowa. Iowa figures are based on a more intensive survey completed after data were assembled for the trr. Regular forest surveys of the other five Central States were completed before national statistics were assembled. In some cases, tables included in this report are presented in more detail than will be possible in the thb publication. The area and volume figures shown by ownerships may differ slightly from figures published by the agencies concerned. This is because of differences in definitions, specifications, log rules, and cruising standards. Unless indicated otherwise, the board-foot volumes are expressed in net volume log scale International inch rule; cubic foot volumes show net log volume excluding bark. Book Description
Excerpt from Indiana's Timber Resource, 1986: An Analysis Fieldwork for the Indiana Statewide forest inventory was begun in July 1985 and completed in December 1986. Reports on the two previous inventories of Indiana's timber resource are dated 1950 and 1967. More accurate survey information was obtained during the 1986 survey than otherwise would have been feasible because of intensified field sampling. Such sampling was made possible by additional funding provided by the Indiana State Legislature through the Division of For estry, Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The Department also surveyed primary wood-using plants in the State. Data from this survey were used to help estimate the quantity of timber products harvested in the State. Indiana Department of Natural Resources personnel have also assisted in training field personnel, analyzing information obtained from the survey, and preparing this report. Aerial photos used in the Indiana Forest Inventory were furnished by the Hoosier National Forest and the usda Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. The following fia reports on the 1986 Indiana inventory have been published (see Literature Cited for complete bibliographic information.
