Glass is a popular cladding material for modern buildings. The trend for steel-framed, glass-clad buildings instead of those using traditional materials such as brick and concrete has inherent problems. These include, for example, the performance of architectural glass in extreme climatic events such as windstorms and heavy snow loads and also during earthquakes. This book reviews the state-of-the-art in glass and glazing technology to resist failure due to these natural events. This thesis is about the design-build project that was completed in spring semester 2005. It was initiated by five graduate students and Professor Bruce Bassler. This thesis covers the pre-design programming of the design-build project, which was a clubhouse for the Jewell Golf and Country Club in Jewell, Iowa. This design-build project brought to the forefront the notion that there are two distinct schools of thought when it comes to programming: the rigid data driven "assembly line" end versus the nebulous, emotive, "What does a building want to be?" end. As the programming was completed for this project, we pulled from these two schools of thought and landed somewhere in the middle, which is a direct by-product of out education in Architecture from Iowa State University. In my thesis, I describe this programming process, during which at various points I felt conflicted and pulled in different directions. The main point of conflict being that the Board of Jewell Golf and Country Club was primarily interested in the spaces they perceived they needed, not programming, while the design group wanted to explore the program more fully so that the space we designed had meaning. This thesis outlines the two schools of thought that we pulled from, the conflict that happened throughout, and the ultimate program of the project.

In any design process, materials affect every aspect of the final project, ranging from functional elements and key structural components to the overall aesthetics and determining final cost. Through this thesis, I will show that a material palette rich in the architectural character of a rural community, specifically the town of Jewell, Iowa, is enough to maintain a link to the historical and current surrounding context no matter what new formal expressions are introduced throughout the design. In the spring of 2004, five graduate students in architecture from Iowa State University at Ames proposed an idea for a design/build project to be completed the following year. Students from Iowa Central Community College Building Trades Program in Fort Dodge were approached to be a part of the project. There was a blending of ideas and a project in a small, rural community centrally located between the two schools was considered. The Jewell Area Development Enterprise (JADE) was approached to see if any projects were needed in that locale. Upon meeting with JADE the idea of a golf clubhouse/community center was suggested. The board members of the Jewell Golf and Country Club were approached to see if they would consider a new clubhouse/community center designed and built by a group of students from Iowa State and Iowa Central Community College under the auspices of Bruce Bassler of Iowa State University and Bill McAnally from Iowa Central Community College. The building is set for completion in May 2005.
