An Account of the Rise and Progress of Mahometanism
Author: Henry Stubbe
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781333187187
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 276
Book Description
Excerpt from An Account of the Rise and Progress of Mahometanism: With the Life of Mahomet, and a Vindication of Him and His Religion From the Calumnies of the Christians Hornby's aim, perhaps, was to present the book in the form of a narrative as well as in historical order, necessitating a fresh arrangement, with the consequent additions, variations, and omissions. This, although leaving the work substantially unaltered, has resulted in occasional repetitions and inconsistencies, and the attempt has been made to eliminate these with a view to general harmony. Some passages, again, have been omitted because they militate against modern canons of taste, or because they break the continuity of the text. With these exceptions, which have been kept within narrow limits, the original remains untouched. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.

The Enlightenment Qur'an
Author: Ziad Elmarsafy
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1780744854
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 336
Book Description
Iconoclastic and fiercely rational, the European Enlightenment witnessed the birth of modern Western society and thought. Reason was sacrosanct and for the first time, religious belief and institutions were open to widespread criticism. In this groundbreaking book, Ziad Elmarsafy challenges this accepted wisdom to argue that religion was still hugely influential in the era. But the religion in question wasn’t Christianity – it was Islam. Charting the history of Qur’anic translations in Europe during the 18th and early 19th Centuries, Elmarsafy shows that a number of key enlightenment figures – including Voltaire, Rousseau, Goethe, and Napoleon – drew both inspiration and ideas from the Qur’an. Controversially placing Islam at the heart of the European Enlightenment, this lucid and well argued work is a valuable window into the interaction of East and West during this pivotal epoch in human history.
