When the Corcoran Gallery of Art opened in 1869 it was the first art museum in the United States capital. Throughout its history, the Gallery has continued to break new artistic ground by following a policy of acquiring works by both well-known and emerging artists, from John Singer Sargent to Kerry James Marshall.
