Book Description
Excerpt from The A B C of Aviation As a result of considerable experience obtained last year in instructing prospective aviators and mechanics, and in response to an, insistent demand, the writer prepared a treatise on air plane power-plants called Aviation Engines, which has met with a very gratifying reception and which is used by many aviation schools as a text on this subject. Instructors who are using the engine book successfully and numerous students who have derived some benefit from its contents have asked for an exposition of the airplane in which its operation and te pair principles would be written in the same simple non-tech nical manner as the treatise referring to power-plants. Book Description
Excerpt from Aircraft in War Chevalier Bayard's denunciation, many centuries ago, of the then newly invented musket - an invention of a purely destructive character and obviously less adapted than the aeroplane for use in peace. The introduction of steam transport by land and sea three-quarters of a century ago must have aroused similar misgivings in conservative minds, which could not see how civilisa tion would be benefited by the discovery of the new means of travel. Book Description
Excerpt from Theory of Flight Although the book is meant as a text for students and engineers, it was not the author's purpose to supply the reader with ready-made formulas in which to substitute design data. Nor was it his intention to give a collection of results that the candidate for a degree should memorize. The book aims, as did the Fluglehre, to develop interest in and understanding of the fundamental ideas that underlie the design and the operation of modern aircraft. The problems inserted at the ends of the sections, particularly those marked by an asterisk, are intended to give some direction to the efforts of any reader who would apply himself toward a better comprehension of the diversified questions involved in the theory of airplane flight.
