Book Description
Though central to the social, political, and cultural life of the nineteenth-century city, the urban volunteer fire department has nevertheless been largely ignored by historians. Redressing this neglect, Amy Greenberg reveals the meaning of this central institution by comparing the fire departments of Baltimore, St. Louis, and San Francisco from the late eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Volunteer fire companies protected highly flammable cities from fire and provided many men with friendship, brotherhood, and a way to prove their civic virtue. While other scholars have claimed that fire companies were primarily working class, Greenberg shows that they were actually mixed social groups: merchants and working men, immigrants and native-born--all found a common identity as firemen. Cause for Alarm presents a new vision of urban culture, one defined not by class but by gender. Volunteer firefighting united men in a shared masculine celebration of strength and bravery, skill and appearance. In an otherwise alienating environment, fire companies provided men from all walks of life with status, community, and an outlet for competition, which sometimes even led to elaborate brawls. While this culture was fully respected in the early nineteenth century, changing social norms eventually demonized the firemen's vision of masculinity. Greenberg assesses the legitimacy of accusations of violence and political corruption against the firemen in each city, and places the municipalization of firefighting in the context of urban social change, new ideals of citizenship, the rapid spread of fire insurance, and new firefighting technologies. Originally published in 1998. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Last Alarm
Author: Thomas A. Woodley
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 1663243867
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 248
Book Description
Last Alarm: The Charleston 9 is the heart-wrenching story of how nine brave firefighters died battling the 2007 Sofa Super Store fire in Charleston, South Carolina. Life-endangering conditions combined together to create a ‘perfect firestorm’ ---a fuel-ladened furniture store that was a time bomb and death trap, and a fire department at the time that was understaffed, ill-equipped, and far below national fire service standards. The author, Thomas A. Woodley, a labor litigation lawyer who represented many firefighters and emergency medical workers for over forty years, provides a factbased account of the multiple alarm response to the biggest structure fire in Charleston in 150 years. Thorough investigations and well documented reports issued by federal agencies and a review team of outside experts, plus firefighter interviews and media articles, enabled the author to accumulate a wealth of material to shed insights on one of the deadliest fires in recent memory.

Fear City
Author: Kim Phillips-Fein
Publisher: Metropolitan Books
ISBN: 080509525X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 417
Book Description
"When the news broke in 1975 that New York City was on the brink of fiscal collapse, few believed it was possible: how could the capital of the financial world go bankrupt? And yet the city was billions of dollars (maybe twelve, maybe fourteen, no one even really knew how much) in the red. Bankers and politicians alike seized upon the situation as evidence that social liberalism, which New York famously exemplified, was doomed to failure; and promised apocalyptic scenarios if the city didn't fire thousands of workers, freeze wages, and slash social services. [The author] tells the remarkable story of the crisis that engulfed the city, forever transforming the largest metropolis in the United States and reshaping ideas about government throughout the country. In doing so, she brings to life a radically different New York, the legendarily decrepit city of the 1970s. Drawing on never-before-used archival sources as well as interviews with key players in the crisis, Phillips-Fein guides us through the hairpin turns and sudden reversals that brought New York City to the edge of bankruptcy, and kept it from going over."--
