Book Description
Siberia - infamous for its brutal winters, and larger than the entire United States - is not the only wilderness within the former Soviet Union. Harsh southern deserts, arctic islands, disputed border regions, and minority populations beligerent towards the their present government are spread all across the gigantic nation. Flying over Russia presents risks few other aircrews in time of peace must face. And while Russian combat aircraft are world renowned for their reliable performance, what happens when something does go wrong? Given their exceptional egress systems - odds are the pilot will eject safely, but how does he survive and advance under such potentially dire circumstances? MiG Pilot Survival: Russian Aircrew Survival Equipment and Instruction explores the components and details of Russian survival science with color photographs, in depth descriptions, and a full translation of the exact manual - with original illustrations intact - as used by Russian aircrews in time of crisis, Alan R. Wise is a consultant, writer, and photographer who has done work for the Department of Defense, Department of State, U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Air Force Museum, and the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center. He has served as a military advisor and has written numerous articles for magazines such as National Defense, Journal of Defense and Diplomacy, Armor, and Behind the Lines: The Journal of Special Operations. He is also the coauthor with Michael S. Breuninger of Jet Age Flight Helmets (see page 5 of this catalog). He resides in Middletown, Ohio and is an experienced collector specializing in flight gear, survival and special operations equipment, and military vehicles.

Book Description
"The Survival Officer and the Flight Surgeon have the difficult and complex job of obtaining, handling, and even maintaining a wide variety of safety and survival equipment. They have a job weighted with responsibility, for men's lives may depend on their thoroughness and efficiency. It is imperative, therefore, that they be fully informed about the equipment and that they keep abreast of all the latest developments. This manual has been prepared to help them in this task. It is not intended as a means of providing complete instruction in the use of safety and survival equipment. It is rather a training guide, with general but comprehensive coverage of the various items of safety and survival equipment. In addition, the writeups for most items list some technical features. In some instances, more space has been devoted to certain equipment than to others. Actually there is no way of gaging the relative importance of one piece of equipment over the others. For example, in some cases, a simple flashlight might prove more important than something as complex as an oxygen system. Therefore, the length of the discussion depends more on the complexity of the equipment than its importance. In other cases, where information is readily available, as in the case of instructions attached to the equipment itself, the information given here is abbreviated."--Preface.

Book Description
Unlike conventional aviation authors and instructors I do not teach primary flying, crop dusting, pipeline patrol flying, bush flying, helicopter medical evacuation flying, and air to ground gunnery using instruments inside the aircraft as the primary situational awareness tool. Rather I teach Dutch rolls, slow flight and stalls over the runway, the energy management turns, use of ground effect on all takeoffs, the brisk walk apparent rate of closure approach, hover taxi in fixed wing aircraft, and low level low power mountain flying using sights, sounds, smells, and kinetics. Sight is used 99.9% of the time looking at the ground. Airspeed, nor any other instrument is used in takeoff or landing. This text teaches the art of flying in the old style at low level using ground references. Its author has over sixteen thousand hours of flying Army helicopters, crop dusters, and pipeline patrol airplanes at three feet to five hundred feet above ground level.
