Air-stable Selective Surfaces for Solar Energy Collectors

Book Description
In this report, summarizing work accomplished during the fourth quarter of the research under NSF -GI -41095, we address two major topics. The first is the progress in making and testing coatings. The second is a critical study of the theory of fixed geometry collectors as applied to the Trombe Cusp and The Winston Collector. Materials selection for absorber designs employing silver and various dielectrics have been done, based on the adherence of the films to the substrate and the stability of the materials at temperatures exceeding 150°C. All of the tasks in assembling and testing the measurement equipment are now completed. The calorimeter for hemispherical emittance measurements has been tested with selective coating samples that have been calibrated by spectral reflectance measurements as well as other known materials. Considerable progress has been made in unifying the theory of "fixed" geometry collectors having low radiative balance flux concentrations (X). It is shown that the basic Trombe cusp, a collector of unit concentration and 27r solid angle acceptance, and as modified by Meinel in this study, merges with the family at the other extreme, the. Winston double parabolic cusp, with the "truncated" Winston designs and the Trombe41einel designs occupying the same acceptance angle -concentration domaine. A graph showing the interrelationships of various fixed collector designs is presented. Some optical ray photographs are presented of three designs within the family of collectors, showing some of the interesting optical geometry of the image which results.

Book Description
The numerous choices we have for obtaining absorber surfaces with (ale) values greater than 25 are discussed. (a/e) as high as 75 appears possible. These high (a/c)coatings suffer from low values for absorptance. We establish a requirement for a coating as having absorptance 0.90, with (a/c) 20.Direct measurement of hemispherical emittance by means of a simple instrument is discussed, based on accurate heat flow measurements through a heated sample. A set of lifetime thermal testing procedures is outlined. Tests in progress indicate no degradation of the coating sample to dale. .. .Discussions given of the question of how best to utilize selective -surfaces. A Fourier analysis of solar input on different types of days indicates the possibility of using the powerful method of MTF analysis to determine system performance. MTF curves for solar flux are given. Studies of various flat plate collector configurations shows that the combination of selective absorbers and selective windows offer significant gains for high temperature operation. flux balance diagrams for 320°F are given.
