Book Description
Painting is a language that communicates visually. But how can we speak of it, when its intelligence is embedded in sensory mysteries? Using his own evocative language, Robert Nelson analyses what the language of painting is made of, revealing how verbal language not only unlocks the unspoken but how it keeps painting alive.

Book Description
The first volume in the series Cambridge Studies in Philosophy and the Arts offers a range of responses by distinguished philosophers and art historians to some crucial issues generated by the relationship between the art object and language in art history. Each of the chapters in this volume is a searching response to theoretical and practical questions in terms accessible to readers of all human science disciplines. The editors, one a philosopher and one an art historian, provide an introductory chapter which outlines the themes of the volume and explicates the terms in which they are discussed. The contributors open new avenues of enquiry involving concepts of 'presence', 'projective properties', visual conventions and syntax, and the appropriateness of figurative language in accounting for visual art. The issues they discuss will challenge the boundaries to thought that some contemporary theorising sustains.

"Like Dewey, he has revolted against the empiricist dogma and the Kantian dualisms which have compartmentalized philosophical thought. . . . Unlike Dewey, he has provided detailed incisive argumentation, and has shown just where the dogmas and dualisms break down." --Richard Rorty, The Yale Review

Book Description
Picturing the Language of Images is a collection of thirty-three previously unpublished essays that explore the complex and ever-evolving interaction between the verbal and the visual. The uniqueness of this volume lies in its bringing together scholars from around the world to provide a broad synchronic and diachronic exploration of the relationship between text and image, as well as a reflection on the limits of representation through a re-thinking of the very acts of reading and viewing. While covering a variety of media—such as literature, painting, photography, film and comics—across time—from the 18th century to the 21st century—this collection also provides a special focus on the work of particular authors, such as A. S. Byatt, W. G. Sebald, and Art Spiegelman.

Book Description
"[Art as Language] is in itself extremely valuable as an example of the still largely unappreciated relevance of Wittgenstein's work to traditional philosophical issues.... This book, as a more or less encyclopedic critique of aesthetic theories from a Wittgensteinian perspective, will be enlightening to aesthetic theorists who want to know, not what Wittgenstein said about art, but what the relevance of his work is to their use of language as a point of reference for interpreting art."—Choice"In a series of acute arguments, Hagberg dismantles the region of grand aesthetic theory that defines art in the terms philosophy has traditionally used to define language.... Written with excellence in argumentation, judiciousness, and a capacious knowledge of Wittgenstein."—Daniel Herwitz, Common Knowledge"A clear and intelligent book. Hagberg's strategy is to show the consequences of holding a Wittgensteinian view of language and mind for aesthetic theories which are either based on, or analogous to, other non-Wittgensteinian positions about language and mind. This is an important project."—Stanley Bates, Middlebury College

Book Description
There is not one but many ways to picture the world - Australian `x-ray' pictures, cubist collages, Amerindian split-style figures, and pictures in two-point perspective each draw attention to different features of what they represent. The premise of Understanding Pictures is that this diversity is the central fact with which a theory of figurative pictures must reckon. Lopes argues that identifying pictures' subjects is akin to recognizing objects whose appearances have changed over time. He develops a schema for categorizing the different ways pictures represent—the different kinds of meaning they have—and he contends that depiction's epistemic value lies in its representational diversity. He also offers a novel account of the phenomenology of pictorial experience, comparing pictures to visual prostheses like mirrors and binoculars. The book concludes with a discussion of works of art which have made pictorial meaning their theme, demonstrating the importance of the issues this book raises for understanding the aesthetics of pictures.

Book Description
Painting Words: Aesthetics and the Relationship between Image and Text addresses the importance of dialogue between art and literature, text and image in our image-saturated era. In a globalized world, isolation and compartmentalization hinder us back, whereas the Romantic idea of belonging urges us to look beyond and to build bridges. Bearing this Romantic spirit in mind, rather than focusing on a traditional paragonal approach, this book puts forward the benefits of alliance by offering an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspective. Illustrations are included to guide the reader into comparativism and intermedial encounters, while providing an inspiring overview of the literary and visual department both in Europe and America from the Renaissance to the twentieth century. The different essays lead us through an aesthetic exploratory journey by the hand of Cervantes, Shakespeare, Felicia Hemans, Emily Eden, William Wordsworth, Edgar A. Poe, Flannery O’Connor, N. Scott Momaday, José Joaquín de Mora, Wallace Stevens and José Ángel Valente, among others. Editors, Beatriz González Moreno and Fernando González Moreno have brought together an international group of scholars around the idea of "painting words," which they define as the pictorial ability of language to stir the reader’s imagination and the way illustrators have "read" literary works over the course of centuries. Many traditional comparative studies examine literature belonging to specific time periods or movements, far less frequently do they bridge visual culture with text-- Painting Words: Aesthetics and the Relationship between Image and Text aims to do just that.
