Book Description
Military academies have served youth for more than a century with proud traditions of producing graduates who are scholars, leaders, and athletes who adhere to a code of honor and ethical principles as they take the knowledge, skills, and dispositions gained at those academies into higher education, the business world, military service, civic endeavors, and the broader workforce. There is a current gap and need for research that explores the various components of a K-20 military school/college education and how those components successfully produce leaders of character for our military, civic, academic, and business worlds both in the United States and abroad. The Handbook of Research on Character and Leadership Development in Military Schools synthesizes research on the impact of military academies by providing a singular compendium of current academic studies on the graduates of military academies and the communities of which they enter after graduation. The chapters will explore the academics, leadership, character development, citizenship, athletics, and other dimensions of both global and national, and both private and public, military academies. This book is ideal for current leaders, staffs, governing board members, and alumni of military academies both in the United States and internationally along with policymakers, government officials, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students interested in the implications of character and leadership development on individuals enrolled in or graduated from military schools.

Networks of Leadership

Book Description
"This study is addressed to all Airmen and commanders seeking to identify and develop good leadership within and across their teams, units, squadrons, and organizations. Evidence reveals a bias in US Air Force leadership assumptions which has focused development methods on individualized traits and attributes while overlooking the importance of social relationships and shared ethical purpose. Dependence on heroic individuals to command the force out of its future strategic challenges distorts the meaning of good leadership, blurs the distinction between commanding, managing, leading, and manipulating, and remains ill-suited to many challenges inherent to complex environments. The network model of distributed leadership, advanced by this thesis, offers a new perspective that reframes leadership by highlighting social network relationships, social reputation, and agency-based ethics. The usefulness of the network model of distributed leadership is demonstrated through a detailed historical case study examining the invention, development, growth, and decline of the USAF Aerospace Research Pilot School from 1961 to 1972. The author explores concepts of network brokerage, mechanisms of social network reputation, and the principles of virtue ethics while tracing the intentions, actions, and relationships among a diverse cast of influential actors. The final chapter of the study offers fresh historical insights with implications for today's leadership development efforts. The result of this study is a practical leadership lens--a distributed perspective that places focus on social relationships and morality over individual traits and competencies-- for today's Airmen and commanders to develop meaningful, moral, and mutual leadership throughout the Air Force."--Abstract.

Book Description
"Sound leadership within a dynamic, ever-changing environment is at the heart of the Air Force's institutional character. It is key to bonding airmen and is the foundation for successful Air Force achievements in peace and in war. Of the many skills and abilities used in the profession of arms, none is prized more highly. As we transform to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century, leadership can strengthen the foundation of mutual trust and respect among the ranks and the organization as a whole. Most people who equate leadership with good management model their leadership practices based on readings and research published in the industrial era of the twentieth century. This understanding of leadership has dominated military organizations in the past but will not serve the mature Expeditionary Aerospace Force of tomorrow. This paper explores the advantages to adapting emerging leadership philosophies into the Air Force culture to meet the growing challenges of the twenty-first century work force. Leadership doctrine, leadership development programs, and the human resource management system should be aligned to support these changes in leadership philsophy and practice. This is critical in order to build Air Force leaders with a clearly recognizable set of competencies and attitudes that thrive regardless of a particular career-path or assigned location throughout an entire career."--Rand abstracts.
