Book Description
Molecular biology has rapidly advanced since the discovery of the basic flow of information in life, from DNA to RNA to proteins. While there are several important and interesting exceptions to this general flow of information, the importance of these biological macromolecules in dictating the phenotypic nature of living creatures in health and disease is paramount. In the last one and a half decades, and particularly after the completion of the Human Genome Project, there has been an explosion of technologies that allow the broad characterization of these macromolecules in physiology, and the perturbations to these macromolecules that occur in diseases such as cancer. In this volume, we will explore the modern approaches used to characterize these macromolecules in an unbiased, systematic way. Such technologies are rapidly advancing our knowledge of the coordinated and complicated changes that occur during carcinogenesis, and are providing vital information that, when correctly interpreted by biostatistical/bioinformatics analyses, can be exploited for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of human cancers. The purpose of this volume is to provide an overview of modern molecular biological approaches to unbiased discovery in cancer research. Advances in molecular biology allowing unbiased analysis of changes in cancer initiation and progression will be overviewed. These include the strategies employed in modern genomics, gene expression analysis, and proteomics.

Book Description
This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at the 4th Brazilian Sym- sium on Bioinformatics, BSB 2009, which was held in Porto Alegre, Brazil, during August 29–31, 2009. The BSB symposium had its origins in the Brazilian Workshop on Bioinformatics (WOB). WOB had three editions, in 2002 (Gramado, RS), in 2003 (Macaé, RJ), and in 2004 (Brasília, DF). The change in the designation from wo- shop to symposium reflects the increase in the quality of the contributions and also in the interest of the scientific community for the meeting. The previous editions of BSB took place in São Leopoldo, RS, in 2005, in Angra dos Reis, RJ, in 2007, and in Santo André, SP, in 2008. As evidence of the internationalization of the event, BSB 2009 had 55 submissions from seven countries. Of the 55 papers submitted, 36 were full papers, with up to 12 pages each, and 19 were extended abstracts, with up to 4 pages each. The articles submitted were carefully reviewed and selected by an international Program Comm- tee, comprising three chairs and 45 members from around the world, with the help of 21 additional reviewers. The Program Committee Chairs are very thankful to the - thors of all submitted papers, and especially to the Program Committee members and the additional reviewers, who helped select the 12 full papers and the six extended abstracts that make up this book.

Book Description
Informatics can vastly assist progress in research and development in cell and molecular biology and biomedicine. However, many investigators are either unaware of the ways in which informatics can improve their research or find it inaccessible due to a feeling of "informatics anxiety." This sense of apprehension results from improper communication of the principles behind these approaches and of the value of the many tools available. In fact, many researchers are inherently distrustful of these tools. A more complete understanding of bioinformatics offered in A Bioinformatics Guide for Molecular Biologists will allow the reader to become comfortable with these techniques, encouraging their use-thus helping to make sense of the vast accumulation of data. To make these concepts more accessible, the editors approach the field of bioinformatics from the viewpoint of a molecular biologist, (1) arming the biologist with a basic understanding of the fundamental concepts in the field, (2) presenting approaches for using the tools from the standpoint of the data for which they are created, and (3) showing how the field of informatics is quickly adapting to the advancements in biology and biomedical technologies. All concepts are paired with recommendations for the appropriate programming environment and tools best suited to solve the particular problem at hand. It is a must-read for those interested in learning informatics techniques required for successful research and development in the laboratory.
