Advances in Membrane Fluidity, Membrane Transport and Information Storage
Author: Roland C. Aloia
Publisher: Wiley-Liss
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 280
Book Description
This book is designed to be an authoritative evaluation of the energetics involved in the transfer of information from the membrane through the cell surface to the biochemical machinery within the cell. The book assesses the information contained within the architectural arrangement of the lipids, carbohydrates and proteins in the membrane and the release of this information to the membrane-bound and intracellular enzymes via stimuli from the external environment. This volume expertly reviews the concepts of membrane signal transduction and provides insights into the cascading events within the membrane that result from this signalling process, as well as the cellular response that follows.

Membrane Physiology
Author: Thomas E. Andreoli
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461319439
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 397
Book Description
Membrane Physiology (Second Edition) is a soft-cover book containing portions of Physiology of Membrane Disorders (Second Edition). The parent volume contains six major sections. This text encompasses the first three sections: The Nature of Biological Membranes, Methods for Studying Membranes, and General Problems in Membrane Biology. We hope that this smaller volume will be helpful to individuals interested in general physiology and the methods for studying general physiology. THOMAS E. ANDREOLI JOSEPH F. HOFFMAN DARRELL D. FANESTIL STANLEY G. SCHULTZ vii Preface to the Second Edition The second edition of Physiology of Membrane Disorders represents an extensive revision and a considerable expansion of the first edition. Yet the purpose of the second edition is identical to that of its predecessor, namely, to provide a rational analysis of membrane transport processes in individual membranes, cells, tissues, and organs, which in tum serves as a frame of reference for rationalizing disorders in which derangements of membrane transport processes playa cardinal role in the clinical expression of disease. As in the first edition, this book is divided into a number of individual, but closely related, sections. Part V represents a new section where the problem of transport across epithelia is treated in some detail. Finally, Part VI, which analyzes clinical derangements, has been enlarged appreciably.

Membrane Fluidity
Author: Morris Kates
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461261201
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 437
Book Description
This book represents the proceedings of a Satellite Symposium of the XIth International Congress of Biochemistry on "Control of Membrane Fluidity" which was held on July 7, 1979 at the Charles H. Best Institute, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada. The meeting was organized by M. Kates and A. Kuksis and was supported by the International Congress of Biochemistry. The purpose of the meeting was to review recent progress in many different areas of investigation bearing on the role of lipids in the structural and functional property of the cell membrane commonly referred to as fluidity. The aim was to emphasize the factors controlling membrane fluidity as studied in appropriate in vitro and in vivo experiments. The Symposium included invited review papers and short papers offered by discussants. In assemĀ· bling the book no distinction has been made between the two types of presentations, nor has any significance been attached to the chronological order of their presentation in the Symposium. As a result it was possible to provide a much more coherent and continuous presentation than that available at the meeting.

Membrane Fluidity in Biology
Author: Roland C. Aloia
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483266494
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 331
Book Description
Membrane Fluidity in Biology, Volume 3: Disease Processes focuses on the relationship of membrane lipid alterations and membrane fluidity to various pathological conditions, providing unique phenomenological conceptualizations of disease states. This book compiles comprehensive reviews on topics such as respiratory distress syndrome, diabetes and receptor function, muscular dystrophies, atherosclerosis, alcohol-membrane effects, and lymphocyte function and cancer. This publication also evaluates the interplay between membrane lipid alterations and membrane fluidity and abnormal cellular function, emphasizing how possible alterations in membrane lipids and cholesterol, and consequent changes in membrane fluidity can influence normal cellular activity and lead to pathological cellular function. This volume is intended for molecular and cellular biologists, clinician-scientists struggling with an understanding of the mechanisms of pathological processes, and biophysicists seeking research problems in pathology to study.
