Book Description
Advanced breast biopsy instrumentation (ABBI) is a device for diagnostic biopsy of detected lesions of the breast. The procedure involves utilisation of a stereotactic imaging system. Safety data differs widely as ABBI requires specialised surgical techniques and surgeon experience differs between centres. The adverse events associated with ABBI were often as a result of technical or equipment failure. No randomised controlled trials comparing ABBI with any other therapeutic or diagnostic procedure or properly designed diagnostic studies have been completed to date. Studies have compared ABBI to core needle biopsy, mammotome and wire localised biopsy. There is some evidence of cost savings from using ABBI compared with other biopsy procedures. But even if there were cost savings, this may not translate into a better cost-effectiveness ratio. MSAC recommended that, on the strength of evidence pertaining to ABBI, public funding should be supported for the diagnostic use of this procedure, as long as fees are such that health system costs do not exceed those of comparators. There is insufficient evidence for the use of ABBI in a therapeutic role for breast cancer.

Book Description
Advanced breast biopsy instrumentation (ABBI) is a device for biopsy of suspicious small lesions of the breast for diagnosis. The procedure involved utilises a stereotactic imaging system and is minimally invasive. From the literature available on ABBI, the sensitivity and specificity of the procedure from the studies retrieved was unclear, most of the studies being quasi-experimental in design, and providing limited detail on patient selection, blinding and randomisation. There is a need for women who are found, via mammography, to have suspicious small breast lesions investigated, to determine whether the lesion is invasive, in-situ, or benign. The limited safety data available suggests that the procedure is safe. Currently there is insufficient evidence to conclude that ABBI is superior to the standard diagnostic tests for breast lesions of less than 10 mm, which are core biopsy or hookwire breast localisation needle for open surgical biopsy. Since there is insufficient evidence to conclude that ABBI is superior to the standard diagnostic tests, no cost-effectiveness analysis has been undertaken.

Book Description
X-ray mammography screening is the current mainstay for early breast cancer detection. It has been proven to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage and to reduce the number of women dying from the disease. However, it has a number of limitations. These current limitations in early breast cancer detection technology are driving a surge of new technological developments, from modifications of x-ray mammography such as computer programs that can indicate suspicious areas, to newer methods of detection such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or biochemical tests on breast fluids. To explore the merits and drawbacks of these new breast cancer detection techniques, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences convened a committee of experts. During its year of operation, the committee examined the peer-reviewed literature, consulted with other experts in the field, and held two public workshops. In addition to identifying promising new technologies for early detection, the committee explored potential barriers that might prevent the development of new detection methods and their common usage. Such barriers could include lack of funding from agencies that support research and lack of investment in the commercial sector; complicated, inconsistent, or unpredictable federal regulations; inadequate insurance reimbursement; and limited access to or unacceptability of breast cancer detection technology for women and their doctors. Based on the findings of their study, the committee prepared a report entitled Mammography and Beyond: Developing Technology for Early Detection of Breast Cancer, which was published in the spring of 2001. This is a non-technical summary of that report.

Book Description
Modern imaging methods have made it possible to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage than in the past. Nevertheless, a large majority of suspicious findings at screening subsequently prove to be benign. It is therefore important to be able to identify benign lesions in a manner that is reliable, tissue sparing, patient friendly, and cost-effective. More than 70% of breast biopsies can now be performed using minimally invasive procedures that meet these criteria. This book examines in detail vacuum-assisted minimally invasive breast biopsy systems (ATEC, EnCor, Intact, Mammotome and Vacora), stereotactic systems, MRI-guided procedures, and ductoscopy. Further chapters are devoted to the pathology of the breast tissue obtained using these procedures, their limitations, the implications of recent advances in breast imaging, and the results of cost-benefit analyses. The closing chapter provides a systematic review and meta-analysis of recent data.

Book Description
The title of this work, Breast Imaging, reflects the intellectual expansion of the field that previously was limited to standard mammography. NMR, Sestimibi scanning, EPR, and optical imaging are all adding to the richness of approaches directed at the early detection of breast cancer. These approaches put us in the enviable position of asking which technologies are the most specific (not just the most sensitive), and which are the most cost effective (and not simply most useful). This book, edited by Dr Etta Pisano, discusses the key questions and discoveries in breast imaging through a series of essays.

Book Description
This book presents the most recent developments in oncologic breast surgery and takes full account of diagnostic, pathologic, and radiologic inputs. It is divided into three parts, the first of which discusses the premises underlying the modern surgical approach to breast cancer. The second part is devoted to what might be termed the conservative program, i.e., breast conservation and oncoplastic surgery, conservative mastectomy, and sentinel node biopsy and axillary dissection. The final part of the book covers different forms of surgery and other treatments in particular settings. Topics include plastic and reconstructive surgery, DCIS surgery, radio-guided surgery, adjuvant systemic therapy, intraoperative radiotherapy, and the role of surgery in locally advanced and metastatic disease. The detailed descriptions of techniques are accompanied by numerous high-quality illustrations. This book will be of value to both experienced practitioners and surgical trainees.

Book Description
Interventional radiology plays an increasingly significant role in the clinical management of patients with cancer, replacing more invasive traditional methods and making it possible to deal with previously untreatable conditions. This state-of-the-art book describes the techniques currently used by interventional radiologists in the treatment and palliation of a variety of malignant conditions. Throughout, the emphasis is on practical issues. Every chapter has been written by a world expert in the topic concerned. This book will serve as an authoritative source of information and will be invaluable to those using interventional radiological techniques in the treatment of patients with malignant disease.
