Book Description
Excerpt from Addresses Delivered Before the Canadian Club of Toronto: Season 1904-05 In clear and convincing language Hon. A. B. Morine, leader of the Opposition in the Newfoundland Legislative Assembly, explained to the Canadian Club yesterday the situation in the island in regard to confederation. It was a special luncheon of the club, and Mr. Morine was given a very warm reception by the unusually large number of members present. President Howell occupied the chair for the first time since his election to that office, and on his left sat his Honor Lieut.-Governor Clark. Mr. Morine, who spoke for a little over half an hour, touched briefly upon almost every phase of the confederation question. He showed the mutual advantages that would result from union, explained the attitude of the people of the colony towards confederation, argued that a campaign of education was necessary in order to overcome the prejudice against confederation among the great majority in the island, and emphasized the point made in his recent intervew with The Globe's staff correspondent, that until a definite offer with terms was made by Canada the advocates of confederation in the colony could do little towards convincing the electors of the desirability of union. At the outset he wished it definitely to be understood that he had no mandate either from the people or any political party in Newfoundland to express any opinions whatever. There were no party lines in the colony upon the question of confederation and he was pleased to have received the assurance of the leaders of both parties in Ottawa that there was no party, sectional or sectarian feeling against union in Canada, but that there was a universal feeling in favor of the inclusion of Newfoundland with the Domination. (Applause) In the island it would be quite impossible to tell upon which side the political leaders would be found in case terms were proposed to the colony and the question made a practical issue. The formation of a confederate party in Newfoundland depended entirely upon the initiative being taken by Canada. The uncertainty as to what terms Canada would give Newfoundland lay at the bottom of political indecision in the island and made it impossible to have a strong political party in that country working for union. Book Description
Excerpt from Addresses Delivered Before the Canadian Club of Toronto, Season of 1911-1912 The outstanding feature of the past year's luncheon pro gramme was the National Series of addresses on the several provinces of the' Dominion. This symposium worked out very happily. For one thing it secured for the meetings a certain continuity and running interest, carrying the members along from one week to another. Prominent men from the different units of confederation dealt with the political areas with which they are specially familiar, and as a result the members in regular attendance are better posted than ever before on the history, resources, achievements and prospects of their country in its different sections and as a whole. Collected and compiled in the present volume the series pre sents in permanent form much interesting data that should prove valuable for reference purposes and even for the use of future historians.
