When survival is challenged by the cold, animals react by employing both behavioral and physiological solutions. Depending on the magni tude of the cold stress and the nature of the adjustment, simple avoidance or sophisticated capacity or resistance compensations may be used. Thus, migration, shelter seeking, metabolic and insulative compen sation, torpor, and freezing avoidance and tolerance are successful tac tics used by diverse groups of animals. To understand and appreciate the benefits of these tactics, it is necessary to examine not only the well being of the whole animal but also their basic underlying mechanisms. In ad dition, it is also of fundamental importance to grasp how seasonal cold affects the survivorship and reproductive success of populations when confronted by a general reduction in primary productivity and an elevated energy cost for maintenance (e. g. in endotherms). In this regard, a synthetic overview which integrates aspects of cell biology, biochem istry, physiology, neurobiology, behavior, and population biology should be a fruitful approach in providing a holistic understanding on how animals adapt to cold. The present volume is an attempt to achieve such an overview; its objective is to provide a depth and breadth of coverage that is essential to a full appreciation of animal adaptation to cold. It is the hope of the contributing authors that this book will serve as an effective reference text for all senior undergraduate and graduate students as well as research scientists with an interest in cold physiology.

As indicated in the Preface, the contributions to this volume are based upon the papers presented at the symposium on Thermoreceptors and Temperature Regula tion held in July 1988 at the Institute of Physiology of the University of Marburg (Federal Republic of Germany) to celebrate and commemorate the life and achievements of HERBERT HENSEL, who directed that Institute from 1955 until his death in 1983, and whose most notable and significant contributions to thermo physiology were in the areas of the properties and characteristics of thermo sensors, mammalian thermoregulation more generally, and the psychophysiology of ther mal sensation. All the papers in this volume deal, to a greater or lesser extent, with these discernibly different but closely allied aspects of mammalian physiology. The editors have sought to achieve cohesion, flow, and balance both in the contributed articles and in their order of presentation, without either large gaps or redundancies in the coverage of the recent advances in the understanding of thermoreceptors and thermoregulation. At the same time we have sought to avoid such a degree of editorial control as to destroy the individuality of the contributions, and the judgements upon which they were based. We have also sought to look both backwards and forwards, and to include some legitimate extension of the con sideration of thermosensitivity and thermoregulation into such areas as climatic adaptation and fever. Hence the "greater or lesser" of the closeness of this series of papers to HERBERT HENSEL'S scientific interests.

This book deals with one of the fundamental problems in the fields of biology and medicine, i. e. , the problem of adaptation of an organism to its environment. Essentially, adaptive responses enable animals and man to perform new tasks imposed by the environment and also to achieve timely avoidance of damage from environmental factors. Such are the roles of the defense response, adaptational reactions to high altitude and maximal loads, immunogenetic responses, etc. The author rightly views adaptive responses of the organism as reactions involving natural prophylaxis of disease, although processes of adaptation can also have detrimental consequences under certain conditions. It is, thus, understandable that problems of adaptation increasingly concern biologists, physiologists, and phy sicians. A number of important points distinguish this treatise from others in the field. Most researchers concerned with individual adaptation of human and animal organisms pay major attention to the dynamics of the gradual development of adaptation, i. e. , to gradual learning of new skills, training for endurance of new loads, or accomodation to high altitude. In the present monograph, abundant original and cited material is devoted to another problem: What is the concrete mechanism by which a nonadapted organism lacking resistance to a given factor is transformed into an adapted and resistant organism? In answering this question, the author concentrates mainly on the molecular basis of the adaptation mechanism.
