Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is the major cause of vision loss in older people. A case series of 108 patients with mean age of 76.1 years were seen in New Mexico during the period from 2003-2004. All patients were diagnosed with a certain type of macular degeneration by their ophthalmologist. An acupuncture approach combining peri-orbital electrical stimulation, ear acupuncture, and a French Energetic technique was applied to patients to evaluate the efficacy and safety to treat ARMD and to explore other treatment parameters. Overall, patients improved in distant and near vision. The only reported complication was ecchymosis. Although there were very limited data to evaluate its success. It is recommended that clinicians appropriately know the status of their patient's condition and follow the guidelines of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Preferred Practice Guidelines prior to any acupuncture therapy.
