Book Description
Since the early 1990s, voluntary programs have played an increasingly prominent role in environmental management in the U.S. and other industrialized countries. Programs have attempted to address problems ranging from climate change and energy efficiency, to more localized air and water pollution problems. But do they work? Despite a growing theoretical literature, there is limited empirical evidence on their success or the situations most conducive to the approaches. Even less is known about their cost-effectiveness. Getting credible answers is important. Research to date has been largely limited to individual programs. This innovative book seeks to clarify what is known by looking at a range of program types, including different approaches adopted in different nations. The focus is on assessing actual performance via seven case studies, including the U.S. Climate Wise program, the U.S. EPA's 33/50 program on toxic chemicals, the U.K. Climate Change Agreements, and the Keidanren Voluntary Action Plan in Japan. The central goals of Reality Check are understanding outcomes and, more specifically, the relationship between outcomes and design. By including in-depth analyses by experts from the U.S., Europe, and Japan, the book advances scholarship and provides practical information for the future design of voluntary programs to stakeholders and policymakers on all sides of the Atlantic and Pacific.

Book Description
This timely book presents strategies for mitigation of the greenhouse effect. It provides practical counter measures to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. Key substitute technologies discussed include energy efficiency and conservation, biomass, and nuclear energy. These technologies are both mature and can be applied on a large scale. Important concepts can apply to other technologies as well. Technologies for a Greenhouse-Constrained Society will help scientists and engineers identify the technological and policy actions needed to counteract the greenhouse effect. Solutions are aimed at both developed and developing countries. Technologies for a Greenhouse-Constrained Society will appeal to environmental engineers and scientists, meteorologists, social scientists, geologists, educators, fuel engineers, energy engineers, economists, and others interested in this field.

Book Description
The Business of Greening, first published in 2000, debates the relationship between business and greening, and the future form this relationship could take. The book gives voice to industrial actors - employees, employers, managers, technical specialists, regulators - in the context of their organizations, within industrial sectors or as part of wider institution regimes. The business of greening is taken as socially constructed, shaped through tensions and competing interests. It produces outcomes that are sometimes unexpected, sometimes hopeful. These outcomes are explored by examining a range of workers, including estate agents, bankers, bakers, printers, regulators, in small and large corporations. Contributors write from a wide range of different social sciences including sociology, geography, organizational science and psychology. This title will be of particular interest to students and researchers of environmental and business studies, and to those who shape environmental policy in government and industry.
