Excerpt from A Voyage Round the World, in the Years MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV Theic confiderations have occafioned the publi3 cation of the enfuing work; which, in gratifying the inquifitive turn of mankind, and icontributing to the fafety and fuccefs of future navigators, ahd to the extenfion of our commerce and power, doubtlefs vie with any narration of this kind hither to made public: Since the circumfiances of this uh dertaking already known to the world, may be fup pofed to have ftrongly excited the general curio fity for whether we confider the force of the {quadron fent on this fervice, or the diverfified dif trefies that each fingle Ihip was feparately involved in, or the uncommon infiances of various fortune, which attended the whole enterprize; each part, I conceive, mult, from its rude well-known out lines, appear worthy of a compleater and more finifhed delineation: And if this be allowed with refpeet to the narrative part of the work, there can be no doubt about the more ufeful and inftruetive parts, which are almol't every where interwoven with it; for I can venture to affirm, without fear of being contradieted on a comparifon, that no voyage I have yet feen, furniihes fuch a number of views of land, foundings, draughts of roads and ports, charts, and other materials, for the improve ment of geography and navigation, as are referred to in the enfuing volume 3 which are of the more importance too, as the greatel't part of them relate to fuch Illands or Coafts, as have been hitherto not at all or erroneou y defcribed, and where the want of fufiicient and authentic information might occa [ion future enterprizes to prove abortive, perhaps with the defirufiion of the men and veifels em ployed therein.
