Book Description
Excerpt from Diary of a Journey Through Upper Canada: And Some of the New England States, 1819 John goldie was one of the company of eighteenth and nineteenth century naturalists whose journals and diaries bring pleasure to us today. Trained to minute observation, yet compelled by Nature to take the long view and the slow pace, they left vivid narratives filled with detailed sketches of places and people. One reason Why these journals never cease to fascinate us is that they afford us a glimpse of the wilderness world we will never know; another is the contrast between the acutely observed detail and the limitless landscape. John Goldie's diary of his North American journey, from Montreal around Lake Ontario and on to Pittsburgh, is one of these wonderful narratives. It has never been published as it was written; the only previous edition, privately printed in 1897, omitted or toned down the political and social commentary which is of the greatest interest to today's reader. The present edition is published by the kindness of Goldie descendants from his diary now preserved at the Toronto Public Library. The botanical notes, kept separately from the diary, are believed to have been lost. Their lack will distress the botanist, but every reader will find plenty of interest in Goldie's day-to-day narra tive, spiced with comments. John Goldie was a Scot, born on the 21$t of March, 1793, in the parish of Kirkoswald in Ayrshire. Having served his apprenticeship as a gardener and displayed an interest in the collecting and classifying of plants, he entered the Glasgow Botanic Gardens, then under the direction of William J. (afterward Sir William) Hooker, where he received a thorough scientific training in botany. In addition he studied languages at the University, Latin and Greek of course, With some Hebrew and modern languages as well. Book Description
Excerpt from Recreations of a Long Vacation: Or a Visit to Indian Missions in Upper Canada When I accepted the appointment which removed me from my native land, I looked forward to the long vacations as seasons in which I might both obtain recreation from sedentary employments, and be made useful to the church, by travelling upon some religi ous errand in the country to which I was about to expatriate myself; what that errand was to be, circumstances of course would decide. About the first Christmas I spent in Canada, I received a request from Mr. Mcmurray, rector of Ancaster, to preach at the opening of his new church at Dundas. The visit made me acquainted, not only with himself, whom I found to have been formerly engaged in a successful mission amongst the Chippeway Indians, at the Sault Ste Marie, on the southern extremity of Lake Superior, but with his amiable and intelligent wife, herself the child of an Indian mother, and. Book Description
Excerpt from Upper Canada: Return to an Address of the Honourable the House of Commons, Dated 18th July 1833 In the state of Maine, as I am informed, this difficulty was so sensibly felt, as to have led to the introduction of the system adopted in Upper Canada in the year.1820. In apportioning the elective franchise amongst the inhabitants, the Legislature did not confine its attention exclusively to the question of property and of numbers, but introduced a new element into the calculation; they considered that a small number of persons occupying one county might reasonably claim as large a share in the representation as a much larger and wealthier body occupying another county of equal dimensions; by this method members were drawn from every part of the province, the local wants of every part were explained, and the interests of each vindicated. In a densely-peopled country, 'like Great Britain, possessing such internal communication as to secure the immediate diffusion of intelligence from one end of the kingdom to the other, this precaution might be the less necessary, since no part is so remote or inaccessible as not to be rapidly reached by information of every projected law, or as to be destitute of the means of making an early protest against any measure injurious to its welfare. Yet even in this kingdom, where the subject has within the last two years undergone the most public and rigid scrutiny, no one, so far as I am aware, has seriously ad vanced the opinion, that the representation of the metropolis should bear to that of the country at large, the proportion which the wealth or population of London bears to that of England collectively. Such a principle would have given to the metropolitan districts between 40 or 50 members, a scheme which, I need scarcely say, would have been rejected by the entire body of the people as altogether nu equal, though resting upon a foundation of the most perfect nominal equality.
