The United Nations has called violence against women "the most pervasive, yet least recognized human rights abuse in the world" and there is a long-established history of the systematic victimization of women by the state during times of peace and conflict. This book contributes to the established literature on women, gender and crime and the growing research on state crime and extends the discussion of violence against women to include the role and extent of crime and violence perpetrated by the state. This report presents the findings of a computerised self-completion questionnaire included in the 2001 British Crime Survey to determine the nature and extent of inter-personal violence in England and Wales. The results of the survey show that inter-personal violence is widespread: approximately one third of the population has been affected by inter-personal violence at some time in their lives; one in twenty women have experienced serious sexual assault; and one in five women and one in ten men have been victims of domestic violence. The results also indicate that there are high levels of repeat victimisation, especially in cases of domestic violence.
