Book Description
Excerpt from News From Virginia, Vol. 11 The following True Relation if not the first, is certainly among the first accounts of this Coun try published after its successful settlement. It was, as will be seen, actually written by that Master Spirit, Captain John Smith and was published only one year after the Settlement at Jamestown. It is hoped that its value, antiquarian, literary and historical, will amply entitle it to the favor of the public, and, in the estimation Of our readers, to the space it occupies in the Messenger. The object has been to make this issue as nearly a fac simile, as possible, that it might be a specimen of the style, spelling and typography of the early part Of the 17th century. Book Description
Excerpt from A True Discourse of the Present State of Virginia These boys would certainly have gone to Merchant Tay lors' School, where Edmund Spenser preceded them a gen cration earlier. It seems that Ralph went on to Oxford for a short spell, for a Ralph Hamor of London was admitted to Brasenose College in 1605, matriculated in 1606 at the age of seventeen and left without taking a degree. But the Latinized prose of the True Discourse is that of an educated man and I feel sure that this Ralph Hamor is our man. He refers to himself in the tract, written in 1614, as young in years and knowledge, and this would make him the not im probable age of twenty-five at that time. Book Description
Excerpt from King and Queen County, Virginia But the author has made great compensation for the loss of so much original information by the diligence of his research and the faithful arrangement of his findings. His pages unfold before our eyes the pioneer settlement of this territory; its subsequent formation into the political division known as a county; the orderly development of this people under the law, customs, religion, and social life of a real English community; the names of many individuals and families who have added substance, culture, dignity, and luster to a brave and refined people; the arrest and almost overthrow of this civilization by a, disastrous war; and the subse quent resumption of communal life under radically changed social and economic conditions. This narrative will be of grateful and affectionate interest to the sons and daughters of this noble old' county, and to Virginians everywhere; and, in after years, to those seeking information for a larger history of our race on these new shores.
